Because they don't care what random strangers on steam think.
It’s hilarious you think that bypassing the filters for your profile name and your custom URL is “edgy”
Edit: Do you think that constantly making your removed custom URLS more offensive and trolling is going to end well for you?
No not really.
Not so sure I like ANY of this *new normal* crap.
Not that I let what other people decide their names should be ever bother me.
What bothers me is the interesting view on censorship being taken lately.
Put all the world on the net, in private areas.. and there goes all freedom..
Sure.
But when the filter is triggered by non-offensive names because they have a Levenshtein distance of 3(!!! that is quite a lot, btw) towards a four-letter-word, it's not normal.
I remember well the times of the old EA lobbies where you had to prefix nearly every German word beginning with b with an "x" for some absured reason. "I am" -> "Ich xbin"
That's not normal. And it never should be normal to create an Anglo-centric filter for a global community that makes other languages jump through hoops.
---
Personally I find the whole idea of a filter idiotic. Online forums are some of the most toxic cess pools as well as some of the nicest places to hang around if the users want it to be. If your forum leans to the former, there is no amount of filtering that will change it.
And the whole "think of the children" argument is nil. Online interactions aren't rated for a good reason. The whole bloody internet is not child-safe. Why try to make a forum?
And not that it works particular well in the best of times when new swears arise. The other word for donkey written with an "r" was a long time ignored, for example.
And an extensive filterlist puts even a normal poster in jeopardy when you don't know where the line between "direct", "strong" and "offensive" language is or you get flagged for "circumventing the filter" because you quote something or empahsize via putting multiple vocals in.
And you certainly don't do it if people are already complaining and throwing "censoring" and "freedom of speech" all around like crazy.
Teso censor it
How does a filter protect anyone?
By you not reading the bad word? You still perfectly well know it's there. You just got called it.
And even if you replace the word, the new word will just take its place. We've seen it on the old SPUF with "fanboy" being replaced by "hammer legion member" which was subsequently adapted by the users.
There is something called The Cylce of Euphimisms or Euphimism Treadmill. Just by replacing a word with another you do not expunge the pejorative thinking behind it. You can see it pretty well with the "n-word" and the "r-word".
And than there are words that have a completely different meaning in other languages/slangs. A ♥♥♥ (f-word for homosexuals) is a cigarette in English slang. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ is the German word for bassoon and frequently misspelled (and most likely filtered right now).
In the meantime I can properly still call you a wanker because that's not a word in American English - and reason for many laughs because it's a surname in the US.
As a matter of fact, I can go HAM and call you all different types of names in German, French, Spanish, ... but god beware I use English. You might feel offended.
Lastly how often did you see people completely losing it once they realise their precious "s-word" got censored and not go on a tirade that would make a sailor blush? Use of filters will enhance this behaviour on some people.
And who is protected by me not being allowed to call something ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥?
That's the problem with filters: they are inherently selective. They don't serve a real purpose. They inconvenience others.
And it's just there because of American morales. Like peeping them out in radio and TV for years. Did this in any way, shape, or form affected the population and made them better people that don't use these words anymore?
Nicely said
