Atelier Ryza
Atelier games are a bit too cheerful for me. Tried a few and they feel childish
S.x.
As for newer games, did you try these?

Not too grand, not too small
Those are non-grandscale games made on tight budget and everything it entails.
Here is something a bit more grandscale, but it involes more sidequests.

I'm sorry I couldn't help you.
"Tales of...", Tokyo Xanadu eX+ (*), Idea Factory / Compile Heart JRPGs, ...
(*) Fanatical has a decent sale[www.fanatical.com] right now
Although I haven't played too much of it yet, so I could be wrong on this, Star Ocean Intergrity and Faithlessness is a rather succinct game. It's rather short for an RPG (about 25 hours or so all told). So while it has some open worldness, from what I've seen thus far, again I don't think it's on the scale you wish.
Have you considered the South Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole games? They're similarly "bite sized" RPGs done in the classic style, and it works so well with the humour.
If you need even more suggestions, I'll happily dig out my catalogue and go through some more suggestions for you - I've got tons of systems from over the decades, so finding plenty of stuff from the last 10 years should be easy enough.
As for SP, I feel I outgrew them a bit. Watched the cartoons 15-20 years ago, now they feel a bit unnecessary edgy, stealing cheap laughs
maybe you can check it out.
