Sexual Anime Adventure Games

Why are these games so overwhelmingly positive and popular on Steam? Who the hell is playing these games? Basement dwelling neckbeards?

First off. It was a rhetorical question. I have never met anyone who plays or would play a game like that. I don't know what someone would get out of a sexy cartoon video game. Is this mostly teenagers or old men like us? It just seems sad to me. You do you though. I don't care what anyone plays really. I am in my fifties also and have been married nearly 20 years. There are so many amazing games on steam to choose from. But a cartoon story board choose your own adventure with sex?

I know it was a rhetorical question. It doesn't change my answer though. That's the point.

The fact that you don't know what people get out of it only demonstrates that you don't know, nothing more. You cannot draw any further conclusion based on that, or it would be an argument from personal incredulity fallacy.

So, even if you are saying "hey, I don't know what people get out of it" you must be after some sort of response or you wouldn't have posted.

In which case, why do you think it has to be largely one group or another? Of course there will be ONE group that is the largest, sure, but I don't see what relevance it is though. The simplest answer is it's likely to be a whole spread of people - from young overly horny teens and twnty-somethings, to older gits like myself, pervs, normal married guys, lesbians, disabled people, lonely people, people with cats, and so on.

And I can say this with one simple word as evidence - FANTASY. The fact that sexual fantasy exists emonstrates why a whole range of people COULD like this.

Again, that's not even counting people like myself, who aren't doing it for tittilation (or at least not in the sexual sense) but just for the absurd laughs. I enjoy Resident Evil 6 for the same reason.

People who are willing to buy such games are the same people who writes the review for them.

Also you'd be surprised on who actually enjoys such games.

Pathetic virgins are legion. I've blocked "Hentai" in my store settings. In theory, I'd be missing out on good hentai games, in practice, Ive yet to see one.

Then you did not look very hard, there are some very good Hentai games with good gameplay.
Of course there is also a LARGE quantity of total garbage.

Let me put it thus way: digging through thousands of cheap wank job fake games to find one good game isn't worth my time.
But if you can suggest a good GAME in the hentai space, please shoot. I am not being sarcastic, I like the concept of erotic games by itself and I'm happy about every new one I learn of.

Same reason why games like "Doom" or "Counterstrike" get high ratings -- there are people that like them.

Also, keep in mind that people are not (usually) buying/playing games that they know they don't like. I don't buy/play Doom, Counterstrike, or Hentai games -- but that also means I'm not giving them a "thumb-down" either, because why should I?

One of the main problems with Hentai games on Steam is that a lot of them are actually blocked in Germany. The "Medienanstalt Schleswig-Holstein" has gone on a major banning spree for adult games on Steam in the last few months, so a lot of the better games cant be bought or even have the store page accessed from Germany.

So whats left is pretty much the censored games with external patches.
And dont get me wrong, i dont say that most or even any porn games reach the quality
of good non porn games. Thats indeed very rare. But there are still some decent RPG, Strategy and similar games in the Hentai genre that are worth playing.
As for recommendations ( of whats left in the German store), you could take a look
at "Eiyuu Senki - The World Conquest" and " Venus Blood -Frontier", both which are fairly fun strategy games. Both need external patches to restore the Hentai content in the Steam version though.

As for full uncensored titles on Steam, "Evenicle" (RPG) , "Meltys Quest" (RPG), or the "Funbag Fantasy (Visual Novel but well written)" series of games of JAST USA are pretty good but some of them are currently banned in Germany.

And above all else, you still need a certain affinity/tolerance for the typical anime artstyle/story tropes. Those are still present in these titles.

Thank you. Don't look like games I'd be interested in but I admit they look like actual games. Funbag Fantasy looks like yer olde harem fantasy though. That impression isn't helped by stupidly oversized funbags. In all honesty though, there's enough tasteless crap from the western side of things which make also clear their artists don't know what female anatomy actually is like.

I backed Subverse on Kickstarter, BTW. It's proportions are rather distorted as well, but it's overall ironic tone (and the promise of proper gameplay attached) promises to suit the style.

Well the whole point of "Funbag Fantasy" (stupid translated name) ARE the big boobs of the characters.
But its also a really well written series of Visual Novels. Well, for the Hentai genre.
There is more to it then meets the eye at first glance. Even if there is a lot to meet.
