Got a free game from site, but can't log in steam
well I go to a site given by a friend and hit the "roll" button, and lo and behold, I win the cd key for skyrim. Then it says log in to steam to get the key. I press the button, get a blank page and I have a timer of 20 minutes now left to get the key.

So how do I log into steam when I am already logged in obviously by writng this post?

At this point, you already should know it's a fake site.

Don't what you are describing sounds like the early steps of a phishing scam designed to gain access to your account no site ever needs access to your Steam account to give you a key.

Change your password, you likely just got phished and now they have your username and password.

Also, to prevent that -- log in with the web browser on the official Steam store ( https://store.steampowered.com ). After you do that, any login pages you get will likely be fake -- if it's a real page, it will automatically log you in.

1) Scan for malware. https://www.malwarebytes.com/

2) Deauthorize all devices... https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

3) Change your password on a secure device.

4) Generate new back up codes.

5) Revoke the api key https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey

YES, your account may be compromised.

Ensure to report the 'friend' that sent you the link.

Next time, don't fall for those for those crappy free items or game site scams.

I'm saying that from experience

And in addition to the above: you might want to report that friend as a scammer. Or if they are someone you actually know up close you may want to inform them that their account has likely been compromised.

Nothing is free, unless you download it from Steam and it actually says "free to play", because ... nope. Scams.
