Best JRPGs on Steam
I'm always looking for good JRPGs to play so I'd like to see what the community thinks are the most worthwhile ones to play. Tales of Berseria is an obvious one, and I enjoyed that.

Tales series.
Disgaea series.
Final fantasy series.
The Legend of Heroes series.

I can keep listing.
For a story-heavy game, Trails in the Sky is an obvious contender. Technology the entire duology-plus-one trilogy, but if you haven't played it, just start by playing the first game, and don't worry too much about the rest yet.

For an action JRPG, the Ys games are definitely in contention, particularly Ys Oath and Ys Origin.

For something a little quirkier, there's Recettear, a business sim combined with dungeon-diving adventure. As well as the forced-scrolling procedurally-generated turn-based game One Way Heroics.

For an older classic, there's Chrono Trigger. It had a bumpy launch, but I've heard a number of things have since gotten fixed.

Dragon Quest XI

Disagree with this one especially with how basic the game almost is.

For best RPGs out there, gotta go with Quint here. Trails in the Sky is the best one. Ys also comes in line as some of the best rpg series as well.

Then of course Chrono Trigger is there

...but man, what an underwhelming list of best JRPGs out there... I'm sure there's more to than this but from my library, its really so low...

I can imagine that a lot of JRPG simply aren't released in the west, or they focus on consoles, or both.

There are also more "specialized" JRPGs on Steam. Some of the above are on my shopping list, but I've actually played some Neptunia games -- including 2 of the mainline JRPGs. Those don't have the most advanced gameplay or graphics; for me, they score on world/setting, characters and story. If you look into that direction, you'll also find "related unrelated" games -- same companies, different games, such as "Trillion" or "Fairy Fencer ADF". None of those have branched out like Neptunia has, at least from my perspective -- I don't really know what happens in Japan and on consoles.

With many of the games mentioned in this thread merely on my shopping list, I have no direct comparison. Also, I don't even know the definition of "JRPG" -- I have to rely on Steam tags or what people say in reviews. Regardless of that, there must be a reason why those games are (usually) given in responses on threads like this, and the lesser known ones are not (and generally remain in their niche)

I did forgot to mention Valkyria Chronicles, yes.

I did think of Tales of Symphonia but OP was already aware of Tales of Berseria so I decided not to bother with that one.

Also there are a bunch of FF games, but the older ones are in their mobile port form which has a middling reaction from longtime fans, while the newer ones are basically one MMORPG (14), one series with middling reactions from longtime fans (13), one game with Denuvo (12), and something criticized for feeling incomplete (15). I guess Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy X are generally agreed to be solid?

There's also Secret of Mana, but I decided to choose CT and not that one since I'm personally more fond of CT.

I guess I also forgot Nier Automata. I'm not very familiar with it though.

And the Atelier series. Another series I'm not familiar with. There's also some other game associated with this from the same dev I think, but I forgot its name.

Similarly there's a game associated with Disgaea's dev that isn't Disgaea. Phantom Brave I think. I haven't played that.

Oh, if you want a small but great indie action JRPG? Eternal Senia.

Not really sure what you mean by "advanced" vs. "specialized", but FWIW Neptunia, Fairy Fencer, and a handful of other franchises (e.g. Agarest War) are all from Idea Factory/Compile Heart, which specializes in games that...for lack of better description, appeal in a very stereotypical way to certain tastes.

The ones I cite just happen to be the ones I've played thoroughly and enjoyed.

Atelier franchise is on Steam, Agarest: Generations of War, Ys franchise, an overpriced Secret of Mana mobile port, Grandia, Neptunia franchise, ...
And a whole world of RPG-maker games that are quite good. Or games that evoke memories of the olden times like Cthulu Saves the World.
I really liked fairy fencer advent dark force, planning to do my second playthrough soon.
