Cheating at single-player games - a bad thing?
I had noticed in the past that some people have a low opinion on people who cheat at single-player games.

Anyway, I notice recently that some people are unhappy about people completing Steam Achievements via cheating. So, maybe this is one of the main reasons - Achievements.

For example, I have been re-playing GTA V (the offline single-player game). I use a game trainer to get infinite ammo, no reload, etc - just because I can.

In truth, I don't cheat at single-player games to get Achievements. I don't even really look at Achievements on my games - I certainly don't aim to unlock them.

Is it technically cheating Steam Achievements if a game trainer will assist you getting an Achievement? Rockstar will deactivate Achievements if you use an in-game console code; however a game trainer can bypass this - but I do it for infinite bullets etc, not to get some Achievement.

Before Steam Achievements were in games, did anyone really care about someone cheating in a single-player game?

In addition, one thing that does annoy the hell out of me - really does - is that some developers these days release a single-player game, but give it an online connection requirement which means that you cannot run a game trainer - STAR TREK BRIDGE CREW - I AM LOOKING AT YOU. I play it single-player and would love to have infinite shields on my ship. I worry about being banned from playing the game if I try and cheat.

It is almost like cheating really is becoming a bad thing in single-player games. I mean, there are even Leaderboard things too - I don't opt into those, but some games have them by default - regardless of online or offline play.

Cheating isn't bad in SP Games period.

Well, a friend got me into monster hunter games. I started to find the grind and stupid battles so long that I just really cheat for enemy HP display and some damage boost to make battles less long altogether. That's in solo, obviously. Game be grindy as ♥♥♥♥, I think my cheat is justified.

Maybe some people would claim it destroy the experience but considering that the games will NORMALLY last 1000+ hours that I don't care about spending on a single game, yeah, I'm fine.

I couldn't care less if people cheat in singleplayer games. I know people who play tycoons and Sims and such and give themselves a lot of money, simply so they can take things at their own pace.

As long as they don't boast about their "performances", it's all good for me.

Edit: Also, I don't care about achievements. Never saw the fun in them.

It is less about the cheating and more about the achivements then anything. People work hard for something, then hate it when some gets it the easy way.

The same can be said too of skill though. Someone put hundreads of hours into a game to get X achivement, while someone else got it easily, yet the one who got it easily will be accused of cheating even if it was done through skill.

One reason not to put so much stock into achivements because they can always be cheated.

Thats true, but beside cheating for achievements, cheating to enlarge your game experience should be fine.

I really dislike people that are using SAM, and honor achievement hunters, but if you just cheat to spare some time, its ok, at least in my opinion.

Here is a another factor - that may be realistic in cheating:

Some games do not offer levels of difficutly - GTA games being a good example - everyone MUST play to the same standard.

Some people that play computer games might be handicapped and rely on easier difficulty settings or cheats to enable them to play effectively.
Not a bad thing at all, who cares? It's YOUR game.
People who care too much about other people’s gaming achievements and leaderboards probably don’t have any other accomplishments to brag about.

It’s a singleplayer game and I will cheat in it just because I can and it doesn’t affect someone else’s gameplay.

I'd love to cheat at Star Trek Bridge Crew.

I have posted on their forums to ask if it is okay to cheat.

It is a single-player game - technically it is co-op too - but it is hardly player vs player. Plus, I always play alone and manning a STARSHIP on your own without co-op players is harder.

It would be cool to fly the Enterprise with infinite shields and photon torpedoes.

EDIT:
In case anyone does not know, it no longer requires a VR headset either.

Singleplayer? Do whatever you want.

Multiplayer? Don't do it, unless it's a game that actively encourages bending the rules.

If you aren't competing for achievements then the opinions of those that are isn't really that important for you. Steam achievements don't have any value other than what we give them. There isn't any real reward for having them other than bragging rights or a feeling of accomplishment. Mostly the feeling of accomplishment because those of us that like to earn them know that people will sometimes cheat.

I happen to really like achievements. I like to do my best to get them but it doesn't affect me personally what other people do. I'll do my thing and they'll do theirs. I do most of my worrying about my achievements on a different site where they will remove people that are obvious in cheating anyway. On steam itself, it doesn't matter much.

Cheating is sometimes actually improving games to one's comfort. I see no real problem with it. If a game feels too long, increase the pace a little and still get a nice experience while cutting down the BS. There are 2 kinds of cheaters. The ones who look for the perfect experience. And the ones who cheat for the sake of ruining other people' experiences. (Such as PVP online games)

I used to cheat in Single Player games back in the days when we played things like Doom, heXen and games from the 90's in general. Nowadays little to none games have the option for the player to use cheats without a trainer and since I don't want to download third party software to give myself money or ammunition, I don't cheat anymore.

The last game I used cheats was Severance: Blade of Darknes and N.O.L.F. The latter, because back then my computer screen was too dark and I only realized there were sharks in the underwater level when they already were gnawing on my feet.
