Disable Friends Network
Is there a way to disable the Friends Network ? I never asked for it and prefer not to have it opening when I start Steam. Can I delete any certain file from my Steam directory in order to completely delete it ? Yes I realize I can just label myself as "Invisible" but that is not the point. I'm here for single player games only. I never realized it was a stipulation to join a social network in order to play a game or two by myself.

Not trying to sound like a jerk (though I know I do, for lack of a better, more saucy word) but I never joined Steam to play house.

This (Friends Network) should be an option to have, NOT a priority.

:Teddy_talk: I too, wouldn't mind a "start minimized in system tray" option and for others, a "no start-up splash screen"

Open the Steam Chat client, in the "Settings" then "Friends" there is the "sign in to friends when Steam Client starts" toggle from "on" to "off" and restart Steam., that "off" option will start the Steam client without the Steam Chat and you will appear "offline" to friends and if you decide to connect with your buds, you can manually open the Steam Chat client and click the connect with Friends network.

Thanks. I noticed that shortly after I posted. It must have been in the latest Steam update because it was not an option before.

Ditto -- this is crazy -- I go to the Steam client and at the top right click on "Steam / Settings" and the friend menu isn't there... I have:

Account
Family
In-Game
In-House Streaming
interface
...
Shader Pre-Caching

How do I turn this VERY ANNOYING waste of time and network OFF!!

I just wanna play my game!

It was moved to the friends list window. Click the cog icon to view the settings.

Cheers!, But I think that is my point I don't have a "friends" list and I'm missing any cog.

I'm running on a Windows 10 Home edition

I'd do a screen snap, but Im missing that feature here too.

Ok got it never mind -- it was in the steam window that is actually trying to make the connection. After the steam update this AM those menu buttons appeared. Now I can see the menu option to turn this thing off.. I'm guessing my steam client window was corrupt or a bug, hence the update.

Useless annoying feature. No option to disable. Thank you, Vulvа.

Update Disable Friends Chat in Steam- It's been a while since this problem was posted. I had to Login to Steam and be Online then the Chat window opened. In the Chat window to the right of my name at the top was a settings cog which opened the Friends List Settings. This had the Sign in to Friends when Steam Chat Starts and Off or On buttons. When you pick Off, you are then automatically set to Offline.

At some time in the future should you want to use Friends, you will probably need to find this place and click On.. I do a draft email with a tip to remind me what I did and when.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
