How are forum moderators selected?
Whats the process like. I notice a lot of them have fairly unique characters compared to the average person(as least when they speak) and I was wondering how such an assortment of characters was selected to be the people who moderate the forums on STEAM. Is there a screening process? Is it locals only? Company members only?

How are they chosen?

On a full moon and near Steam headquarters, at a hidden cabin in the woods.

Ok, so the new acolyte is asked to lay on their back and then several hooded figures kneel around the body, these are Steam forum veterans and each one places two fingers under the possible minion and they chant "... light as a feather, stiff as a board, light as a feather, stiff as a board..." and after a few minutes, the new potential will levitate up to 2 feet and then the aged forum disciples withdraw their fingers.

9 out of 10, the new potential will remain afloat and so, it's a special sign of the High God Gabe's acceptance.
If not, the plummeting rejects are sent to moderate the CSGO forums for some time.

Game hub moderators are chosen by the game developers.

Global moderators are chosen by Valve.

Support moderators are employed by Valve.

Well that sheds some light on about 10% of the basics of it. Thank you.

EDIT: Your edit seemed to basically answer the question in full, assuming its accurate, not sure if thats a moderator with a white highlighted name, or where they get their info from. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

thanks

The second link is what Global mods will link in threads about the same topic. His post is the most detailed and accurate summation for how users might be chosen.

I don't think we really know the requirements, it's a package deal after all. I think it's important to have someone who wants to moderate for the right reasons, helping the community - not for their own online reputation, and someone who can articulate well, argument, take part in discussions, show leadership to an extend and remain cool.

How did Valve contact you? Did they message you over Steam chat? Did you think they were scammers at first trying to hijack your account and steal all your sweet CSGO skins?

I can imagine that now.

“An employee of Valve messaged me on Steam and asked me if I want to be a moderator on the forums.”

“They are scammers. Report, block, and move on.”

I'm a bit of an exception to the rule so it didn't work like that for me.

I know the older moderators that were asked where send a PM on vBulletin (the old forums), where it was easy to see if someone was official - just like here, names were colored.

That said, if you get an official Steam messages (either through Support, or a moderator message, or even an official PM) it's a lot different than what you would get from a scammer, that would be normal chat.

I've send you a PM to demonstrate.

Oooh, yea. I see. That’s also where you issue warnings and such, right? Or something similar anyway. That’s pretty cool. Thanks for that demonstration.

I remember the old forums and definitely wish they were still around. Although, the game section would be so incredibly enormous by this point.

They have to meet on a secret Island where they undergo rigorous selection processes and secret rituals.

Are you saying its a forum message?
Whoever choses community mods obviously is not interested in doing a goos job

a community mod unjustly locked a I made. Then instantly banned me when i tried posting it again after corrected the alleged problems it had.

And when I contacted him via steam support I only got automated messeges

You mean the thread you started name calling another user. Be them troll or not that’s against the rules as is reposting closed topics.

So how is the community mod not doing a good job if there enforcing the rules?

seriously dude whats wrong with you? I see you everywhere doing nothing but making provocative statements..... why? How can you do that for years on end and find that a satisfying use of your time?

This isnt a rhetoric or meant to insult, I honestly want to know why you spend so much time and effort doing this.
