It's usually hours
If it's Steam, that's the way it works normally. Unless you change the settings, its default is to continue running until you shut down the machine. I think the rationale is that when you finally come to your senses and decide to start gaming again, you won't have to wait for Steam to start up.
I wish I could tell you where in that labyrinth of menu options the setting is, but I can't find it quickly. If you can't find it, maybe ask and someone will have that answer.
