I myself have an Htc Vive, I love it for what it is. But the reality is the price is high, and Index is even higher. It won't get a whole lot cheaper in its lifetime. Perhaps shave a few hundred off, maybe double that for a special black friday at most. But it will remain expensive mostly because of the build process and price of materials.
I just feel that if Valve Also had a stand alone competitor similar to Oculus releasing Oculus S (Pc based Hmd) alongside a standalone, would be the way to really compete. Because Oculus is winning the war from sheer price difference.
A casual/new to vr person is more likely to get Oculus S or Quest. Almost no setup, and easy to use, plus cheap. And it does everything the Vive does.
It is not necessarily premium because it is expensive.
Valve is not aiming at the casual market at all here. The Vive and Rift are still there for that.
Um yes thats kinda the point
The Vive has full roomscale tracking and can track beyond your field of vision. That's why for a lot of RPG style game you can reach BEHIND your back to get your sword or shield. You can't do that with the new Rifts because they can only track objects in front of you so when you try that the controllers just freak out as it loses tracking.
They're addressing room scale tracking in different ways. The Vive is more robust in the way it can track anything but that premium of course comes at a cost.
Well, it doesn't freak out and mess up. The Oculus S is pretty good about it. I tried a tech demo of it. I tried to reach behind and grab, and I could. It basically freezes your arm where it no longer sees it and makes some assumptions based on the other arms input.
Although yes, it is more precise in that way.
I am just pointing out that they're missing out on a market that could boost funds and hype for future Vr sets.
Yes that's basically the S freaking out because it lost tracking
But again you don't have to compete for 'everyone'. Blue ocean strategy
That's true. I am just hyped for the potential of Stand Alone hmd's in general. The tech will be quite good in a decade or so. I see us heading full steam towards t he oasis. Or something close. xD
Fair point.
(to make me by the new Rift S or Quest)
I'm on the fence on buying the index due to having to buy a whole new setup (sensors, controllers)
If someone made a mod to make my old rift controllers and sensors compatible with the index, i would absolutely buy the headset. then buy the other parts at a later date
