Watching someone playing
Hi!
When I visit one's profile and click on "Watch game", does it interfere with the person's gameplay (such as lags)? Does the person know I'm watching?

Yes, it does, and it's incredibly creepy. Most people don't know they can disable it in their settings.

You can only watch if that person has broadcasting enabled. And no, it does not interfere with gameplay. And yes, they can see if you are watching. You get a small message popup " xxx is watching your broadcast" and in the upper right corner will be a small overlay with a number showing how many people are currently watching. There is also a separate chat window to chat with users watchers.

I've had instances where it did interfere in game play, ymmv, notably on Space Marine playing exterminatus (private match). I had to ask the person several times to leave due to lag which improved once they did.

Its possible that its depending on your pc performance and internet speed.
I can just say that i have some friends who watch me play now and then and i never noticed any slowdowns in multiple games.

Also had it happened quite noticeably on Wolfenstein: NWO, keeping in mind that at the time, my PC had no business playing that particular game :)

@ OP. Common courtesy would dictate to ask the person prior to viewing their game, even if they have broadcasting enabled. Just send a quick chat asking if it is ok. Just because it's enabled isn't carte blanche to just start viewing, imo. As stated, it's a bit creepy to start watching without letting them know first.

It's a very interesting feature.
It's a shame if it's inconvenient to the person that's been watched.

Some games lag, clip, or crash upon broadcasting.
Other games handle broadcasting flawlessly.
Depends on your system, the game, and how they react to each other.

If they allow broadcasting, just watch. If they get creeped out by it, they can disable the broadcast.

Why?

You are able to disable that in the Steam client preferences. To have it enabled implies automaticly, that this person allows it. So there is no need to ask for permission ever.

And there is no excuse if the person is too dumb to disable it. If that is the case, it's even dangerous for that person to use the internet at all.

So you are equating not knowing it's enabled by default to intelligence or lack thereof?
