What is so enticing about Visual Novels, why are they classified a game?
No rude remarks intended, im just curious. Noticing lots of them follow the Anime trend. This begs to question because they weren't so prevalent as they are now.

I watch Anime... but, yeah.

It's all about T&A, usually wrapped in a pretentious or depressing excuse of a plot. Grotesque schlock for shock value and mindless glorification of Japan optional.

For that brilliant insight ( thats also completely wrong on top) you had to necro a 3 year old thread?
Really?

The Japanese and Koreans have a far more advanced industry. Made for mobile phones, I believe. You can read a few chapters a day. The animation accompany the story, animation is smaller in size and probably cheaper to produce and does not detract from the story. Steam mixed them in as Games to us.

There are some VNs that are not anime-like. Examples:

They're more of an interactive story than a video game.
Thats what games are. Games are anything with a goal, an end state, and a mechanism where by the user can affect the outcome of the end state through their own actions and choices.

Its worth noting OP Interactive novels and VN's are an old and venerable game genre, particularly in the east, and truth be told they are the reason JRPG's developed the way they did.

Simple - umbrella terms. Look up what that means.

You will get purists who moan about all sorts of pedantry because THEIR view of how things should be is strict and everyone else should follow suit because. These people are idiots and should be ignored.

From the point of view of someone like Valve, they operate a store. So to have ANY term or descriptions AS WIDE as possible is the more sensible thing as it means that the vast majority of people will be able to find what they are looking for. Being restrictive and pedantic is obviously the antithesis of that.

So, in regards to graphic novels, there ARE small elements of gameplay in there in the same way that choose your own adventure novels do too. It's inarguable.

So, for that reason they absolutely should be listed as such.

I usually prefer the visual novels that have at least some interactivity or choice to them. There are some out there where you literally are just reading a story. Phoenix Wright series is a good example of an interactive visual novel. And yes I like point an click adventure games too. I grew up with them for sure.

Likely a similar reason why people like point and click games. It scratches a gameplay itch for those people. I may not understand what it is but if people enjoy the style of game who am I to complain.
Why should any game be classified "a game"?
I mean strictly speaking every game besides sandbox games are only guiding you through a pre-written story with one (or maybe a few) pre-designated endings no matter what you do.

So infact every game is pretty much a derivate of visual novels. The story book is the novel and the artworks about it is the visuals so infact any development of a videogame is pretty much an interpretation of a visual novel. The only thing other "games" have above actual visual novels is the illusion of actually having ANY influence on the game.

No need to either brag or swear about a given genre anyways. It exists and there is people that like it as well as there is people that hate it.

This is a pretty excellent breakdown of it.

Yes, you absolutely can reduce most games to not much more than vehicles of a story. I'd argue that the vast chunk of something like Bioshock Infinite applies here.

I think people get too hung up on terms anyway - we see people often post about "why has this game got x tag? I don't think it should have it" failing to accept that what THEY view as their description doesn't apply to others, and a shop's view is to be as WIDE as possible in description.

So you make an excellent point again about getting hung up on the term "game".

All that matters is this, I feel - does the item on offer entertain you in any way? If so, that's all you need to ask.
