How do you unlock emoticons?

I wondered how people got emoticons, in such a large number. I'm sure they didn't buy them all.

You unlock emoticons by farming steam cards on certain games that have them, and when you collect the right amount you are able to craft a badge. These badges will then be unlocked along with your emoticon and theme. You can also buy steam cards on the marketplace if you want them quicker. Good luck.
