Most games have rather underdeveloped protagonists with little impact on the game. Even games famous for their story and atmosphere fall into the trap of making the protagonist jut a projection screen for the player - look at Half-Life with its eternal mute or Dead Space where Isaac - a guy with no combat expereince at all - is experiencing a freaking nightmare and sees his crew mates getting slaughtered without so much as batting an eye.
Games with Female Protagonists which stand behind them at least make an effort of character development. For great examples look at Remember Me, Beyond Good & Evil, Heavenly Sword or some of the stuff by Rhianna Pratchett. Some of them are ultimately a bit stretched, like Tomb Raider's (2013) Lara turning from an innocent whiny girl into a mercyless killing machine in a matter or days/gameplay hours, but this is more or less because in the end it is a game.
I am referring to the fact that most(if not all) gamers don't like most of the games with a Female Protagonist becasue the games are crap, and NOT because the main character is a female...
There are games like Fire Emblem Sacred Stones that stars Princess Eirika, and I think that game is fantastic. Then again I like strategy RPGs like that.
And I'm a sucker for games like Raphsody: A Musical Adventure where the girl goes out to save the prince with her power to communicate with stuffed animals. It's a cute RPG that presents itself like a Disney musical - with actual musical numbers included! The whole game is a stage play.
There are bad games with heroines in the lead. I don't like Final Fantasy XIII at all. But not because of Lightning. Because I don't like how the game is a hallway. I don't like the Crysterium level system. Those are gameplay problems, not heroine problems.
It's all about perspective, and as a mom of two girls who love to game as much as I do, I'm always on the lookout for these kinds of things.
Did I say that ALL games with female main characters are bad?
Read what is written _BEFORE_ you get offended and make accusations people...
Why such hostility? I'm just asking a simple question. You said most are bad, but you didn't specify which. How am I supposed to know if the original tomb raiders fall into the most category or not?
This is also awful ironic because it seems to me that YOU are the one making accusations here.
That's, uhh... being awful accusatory... I mean, if we're gonna have a discussion, let's have a discussion. No need to spout vitriol over it.
You even use a bow to kill rabbits.
