skyrim on mac/clueless about wineskin
okay so i made the mistake of buying skyrim only to realize it doesn't work on macs without windows. i really can't shell out the money to buy windows, so I tried the wineskin method but i have no idea what i'm doing! I downloaded steam, then bought the game, then downloaded wineskin and the skyrim wrapper from porting team. I've googled this a thousand times but i cannot grasp the concept of how to use a wrapper. also idk how to locate the skyrim files in finder. If anyone could do a step-by-step (like baby steps) guide for someone who's clueless about all this computer jargon, it would mean the world to me and there's a chance i will be your personal slave/eternally grateful.

I 'successfully' installed Skyrim on my Macbook Pro yesterday using the instructions I found here: http://portingteam.com/files/file/7782-skyrim-wineskin-updated-2014/ When I play, it starts out great, but doesn't take long before the graphics go crazy and look like a multi-colored starburst. Gonna upgrade my memory and see if that helps. (My specs do meet those listed, so ymmv.)

I turned down the graphics and never had the problem again. Late 2012 Mac Mini. Run using Crossover because then I don't have to worry about how to set things up.

I know it has been a long time now, but another possibility for installing Skyrim on Mac is with the Porting Kit.
Another vote for the Porting Kit. Wine and the open source community rules. I've used PK and also bought Crossover -- between these two I am usually covered when Steam makes a major update and breaks everything so nothing works until users and open source people find workarounds. My game runs decently except occasionally I get the WIndows blue screen of death, lol never thought I'd see that on a Mac. Making Skyrim work on a Mac is doable but not simple, prepare for the learning curve. You have to get the settings right between: your computer hardware & OS, the installed Windows software settings, your RAM, and anything that's necessary but no longer supported on Steam like Arthmoor's Unofficial Skyrim Patch (only available on Nexus now). Once it's set up you can add mods from Steam, or learn to download them from Nexus and install them yourself. Be prepared to learn what Windows directories look like on your Mac, because you will be going inside those to tweak and test.

You're going to have to look at a few guides online because they're all outdated, none of them wlll have your exact specs, and you're going to have to figure it out. Like owning a vintage VW van, you're never going to find your exact parts in one nice package, but you can find what you need and get that beautiful thing to run.

@VitorMM was very helpful to me at PT a couple of years ago, and the entire PT community is great for understanding Wine on Steam.

I'm not technical, just persistent, so no I'm not offering guides or support because I will have no idea about your situation, I didn't track all my successes & failures, and I lost a lot of old links due to a dead computer last year. Bottom line: start by finding people at PT and bookmarking everything related, from Steam to Reddit to Crossover and everywhere. Good luck, it's possible.

Still Fus-Ro-Dahing on Steam with mods in 2020 on a mid-2011 iMac with 12G RAM.
