How to connect controller with macOS Monterey?
I've been wanting to play games like Hollow Knight on my 8bitdo controller by connecting it as a Nintendo Switch Pro controller and it doesn't seem to work. It works on other applications like emulators, but I can't connect any of my controllers on steam with this macbook I got.

I had this same problem prior to Monterey and M1. 8bitdo doesn't work in steam it's not a supported controller. It worked fine for me in OpenEmu though just like you are describing with an emulator. The only controllers steam will see for me is the ps5 controller and i've see on this forum the new xbox controller works. I hope this helps you understand what's going on! :)
Can you connect it as a Generic Controller instead? Might be able to configure it there
Which 8BitDo controller do you have? I think if you switch it to Mac (PlayStation) mode it will work in HK and not require Steam Input. Opt out of Steam's config support for the controller. You may have to enable Native Controller Input in the game.

I have the sn30 pro+ controller
OK. If still trying to play some HK (though that was some time back huh? :D ) and have the controller in Switch mode:

Connect via BT.

Disable Steam Input for the game (Right-click the game in Steam Library > Properties > Controller > select Disable Steam Input)

Enable Native Controller Input in HK:
HK main menu > Options > Controller > set Native Controller Input to On and then restart the game for the change of that setting to apply

Normally, that would be enough but also do these:
Disable Switch Pro Configuration Support:
Steam > Preferences > Controller > General Controller Settings > untick Switch Pro Configuration Support

If at that screen Steam is saying you have Xbox 360 controllers connected, follow this: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/2/3198119849656535195/#c3198119849667529884
Do the quoted comment, follow the post if "controller_blacklist" isn't found

Things should be working with HK since it natively supports the Switch controller, so doesn't need Steam's emulated 360 controller which, from what I gather, isn't yet functioning on M1 Macs.

You had said you were having trouble connecting controllers to Steam. Is that still the case or does Steam now show the controller as detected? (Steam > Preferences > Controller > General Controller Settings)
I'm done with the runaround my Steam Deck arrived 2 weeks ago and I have a alienware laptop now to game on. I would've loved to stay in my Mac bubble but the fact Steam makes in super hard to get controller support in our environment anymore made me step outside. I will say I'm glad I got a steam deck the thing is amazing and almost all of my games work and I have over 100.
