The RAM isn't the only factor of performance...
It also depends on Graphics and Processor, I'd assume a Mac with 16 GB RAM wouldn't have weak components...

CPU is not bad, a bit faster than an older i7-2600 (non-k).
But the lack of a dedicated videocard is the really, really big issue.
That said - Apple's graphics APIs are likely the real issue. Even my 16" WITH a dGPU gets hot when playing games.
