Just to clarify, the Ancient Greeks actually came up with that belief, not Maslow.
Well that's nice to know. Although I wasn't claiming that he had sole ownership over the idea...
I was more interested in Maslows hierarchy because to of the diagram that comes with the theory. I like the way it presents human needs and felt that the diagram would be accessible if someone happened to Google it. I should have explained my reasons as to why I used it; perhaps then my reasons for referencing it would have been clearer.
Of course, as you have rightly pointed out, the stand-alone concept of self-actualisation is a philosophical point. It is not, in fact, a notion owed by any one person.
I think there is no answer to the 'meaning of life' because the question is existentialist in nature and can only be answered by the individual.
For those who don't know what it is... and can't be bothered to Google it:

Well, I say that, but the closest thing we actually have to meaning is evading death. Literally, everything we do is to try and cheat it, all our medical advances, history, everything. People wish to be famous so they can leave a legacy, and in doing so win a small victory over their mortality. I'm sure someone will argue with me, but the obsession in many religions with an afterlife is also a symptom of this: the thought of an eternal existance is very comforting.
If the overriding 'meaning' of life for almost every human being (and by extension, every ancestor of human beings) wasn't to reproduce, we wouldn't be discussing this right now.
Attributing any kind of further meaning is a particularly human phenomenon, and is at best humans wanting to elevate themselves above the rest of the natural world, and at worst simply another form of mysticism.
