We can only wait and see where games are going.
My opinion is WoW was more popular still than Rift because more people know about Wow compared to Rift.
It is interesting how you mention SWTOR. They might get a second wind because they went FTP but it is pretty obvious they've purposely limited it.
With games like Wow, Rift & SWTOR-if they'd stop being so greedy trying to make money-give people the ability to play free to max lvl and not limit locations so much-they've had a chance for a second wind. I'm sort of against this idea but it seems if you do the opposite of limiting lvls of progressing and just make it that FTPers can still join guilds/clans-but not be able to create clans-then supposed players that claim to not be willing to shell out money are willing to shell out the dough to be able to make their own guild thus making them willing to shell out money for more cosmetic items that make a guild unique.
I personally think Tera will have a good potential to catch a second wind because they've decided to not limit the maps or lvl of characters. I do think they've made a mistake of making possible for FTPers to still be able to create their own guilds (as far as I can tell), but if they start picking up cosmetic things to make a guild be more individualistic and make it only available in item mall-they might still make money.
So I think because of the road Tera took launching into FTP without limiting lvl progression gives it a good shot at survival. However it could stagnate like Aion. However I think the only real reason Aion stagnated as FTP game is the lack of races. I think if they'd add more races they'd gain as much ground as I think Tera can as a FTP game.
In my opinion as I've played both games. Tera is pretty much similar to Rift and if I liked Rift testing out Rift lite-I'd change over to Tera since both games are all about end game content. Unlike Rift I as a FTPer can reach max lvl and reach all original maps. As for the expansion packs you still have to purchase them if you want to progress to the added end game content.
However, I personally think you get a better package deal with Tera compared to Rift as a FTP gamer and when you want more from reaching final end limitations as a free to player starting to purchase the extras you gewt more bang for your buck via the Item Tera mall compared to Rift. (or more appropriately-I should say you will.)
But seriously, I enjoyed Vanilla WoW, and TBC was ok, but then it started to drift away from its roots and in doing so many players did too. The magic of MMOs is gone, that unique spark of excitement, but I think they may still have a few years left. But as has been said, F2P is here (not counting rubbish ones like SWTOR and such) and I think it'll take a lot to tip it off the throne. I don't mind if I pay, or if I don't (TF2 a great example) as long as the game is good. I happily payed 30quid for Dishonored, because quite frankly I love it more than bacon, and that's a lot.
What things about Rift was good compared to Tera? I mean I do see certain things, but I still reguard both equal in my opinion though I think Tera may have an upperhand since it went FTP.
