And that is why I don't play Guildwars 2...too.
This is, of course, just my opinion. Others are free to make their own.
I get that people have a line they don't want games to cross.
Mine would be:
Games with a monthly fee that have a cash shop
$60 games that are not MMO's but still have microtransactions ( IE: Dead Space 3 )
Reminds me of Terra Online. Game + fee + cash shop. $10 for a sword skin? Realy? :-P
I prefer a monthly fee MMO. They are dying out though, so I haven't played one in a while.
If Defiance offered an option like that, I would probebly give it a try.
I too prefer MMO's with monthly fees (and no cash shops). The problem is they all seem to bomb and go free to play. I'm really looking forward to Elder Scrolls but I'm sick of spending money on pay to play MMO's that go bust two months after release.
I think the best thing devs can do is give two options as you just said.
Give us the option to pay the sub and get everything the game has to offer along with the F2P/cash shop for content offering.
After reading this thread I'm not going to any more.
Why can't we just have an MMO again soon that simply lets us play and have fun?
This whole stuff about getting ingame stuff through preorders is BS.
Microtransactions for every little detail is BS. Personally I have no issue with mictrotransactions, but when every part of the game is based around it, it just gets silly. Stick to cosmetic stuff...
Season Pass? I'm not ever gonna consider this game again.
And I really hate DLC. When I buy a game I expect it to be finished and playable all-through.
While this is true you do need to keep in mind the competition at this point would be brutal for a 60$+microtransactions. There's just flat out 60$ games with dlc (which I should add this game has as well for whatever reason) and then there's F2P games with micro transactions. Unless this game actually differentiates it self from those in a significant enough way (and the Tv tie in gimmick is not enough, a community will not remain stable from that alone) it will crash and burn fast.
I wouldn't really lump all DLC into that pile, cut content is dumb (Glares angrily at EA and Capcom among others) but stuff like Skyrim's DLC is a nice way to expand the story after it launches, I honestly don't mind as long as they're actually stuff made after launch.
The one thing everyone is forgetting is that they are releasing the Defiance game and TV Show. That means some of the DLC could be new items, monsters, missions and towns etc from the TV Show.
Read this by TechHive:
Defiance, a new video game and TV show hybrid, is a near-perfect example of how these two forms of media can interact with each other to create one unified story across different platforms.
Both a video game and a TV show, Defiance doesn’t follow the typical show-turned-game model that we’re accustomed to seeing—or even the converse game-to-show model that’s just emerging. (See Disney’s Where’s My Water as an example of that.) Instead, the story of Defiance was created to coexist between game and show. For example, Defiance will be released as a game in early April, and the show’s pilot will air on SyFy two weeks later. The first mission of the game happens before the show actually starts—the mission ends with the introduction of the main characters of the TV show, and the show picks up where the game’s first mission leaves off.
As the TV season of Defiance progresses, supplemental updates will become available for the game, so game missions will run parallel with the action and storyline of the show. When new characters are introduced in the show, they’ll show up in the game as well.
That...sounds realy stupid. Feels like a huge publicity stunt and a money grab. Just reinforces my decision to stay away from the game.
That along with the high starting cost ($60 for base game), microtransactions and DLC...now I know I should avoid it.
I agree with this, it's a interesting gimmick but in the end it won't mean jack and probably be not much different than a movie tie in game with it's own side story. From a practical point they'll just lock off stuff until the show covers said plot point, if you're just playing the game and not watching the show (which people should be able to do) it's just going to be locked content.
And as for the game affecting the show, that won't happen for at least a season (which means the show needs to be good enough to continue that long) and I doubt it will be anything major. It's not hard to point at something like players completing a quest to wipe out some race and saying see you guys did that! It's on the show now! What would be interesting is the characters use player slang (minus dumb ones like Lfg or what not, but like a nickname for certain enemies or something) or use tactics players use for certain enemies. but again we'll need to wait at least a season or so before we see anything.
