Making Steam "Portable"
I need to know whether you can install steam on an external hard drive so I can use steam on any computer without having to go through the tedious and annoying download time of the games. If it is possible, how can I do it without steam having any trouble opening or whatsoever.

Yes, I do precisely that.

I have a couple of hundred Steam games on a hard drive with the Steam exe, running through a hard drive dock.

Simply download Steam to your chosen drive, and move (or download again) the games onto that drive too.

Easy peasy. Remeber to ensure when you do download, you've selected the right drive where it gives you the option.

Do bear in mind that the game saves won't be copied across with it, unless there's cloud save ability on the relevant game(s). This is where GameSaveManager comes in very handy to amalgamate your saves for easy back-up.

So basically I just back everything up onto the drive? Because last time I downloaded on to a drive and the second time I plugged the drive onto a computer steam was bugging.

Yup, copy your game data (steamapps folder, etc), but redownload Steam so that it installs correctly on that drive.
