Why can't americans speak proper english anymore ?

How many times do I have to listen Americans on YouTube say "if I was you" or "If I was there", when this is blatantly wrong, absurd and preposterous?

The only correct English form is "If I were you" or "If I were there" and I am so sick and tired to listen to this "was you" rubbish when I am not even a native English speaking person.

When you are talking about a hypothetical situation, you have to use "were" and not "was", even if you use the first person singular pronoun "I" .

Pfff....Americans...What do they learn in school? Even Europeans speak and write English better than Americans. You should have all been rusticated from school.

Whatever your language is there is an excellent chance that native speakers use forms that are not strictly speaking 100% correct from the point of view of grammar.

That is why there is a difference between scholastic language, that is the one you learn on books and practice, and the actual language people speak.

And that’s even discounting the fact that over an enormous stretch of territory, particularly before the modern communication systems became a thing, variations of the language, new names, different meanings, different way to spell or say the same exact thing etc etc are all bound to happen.

It's not scholastic language...."Rusticated" is scholastic language, "if I was you" is a fundamental grammatical mistake.

We are just letting it evolve so it be call 'merican. At the current rate, we still have at least another 150 years or so before it branches off enough to be considered another language. My guess is it will have a lot more Spanish words in it, perhaps replacing some of the French words.

Some time ago a British guy might have said the same about words like “color” or “favorite”. “Ha, look at these stupid americans, they can’t even spell simple words like colour!”.

The correct version is whatever people agree on the correct version is. If most americans start saying “if I was you” for the next 20 years, that’s gonna be the new “correct” version of American English.

Language is not a set in stone rules written in a book that can never be changed. It’s far from that. It’s constantly changing, new words get added and old ones get forgotten, some get taken from other languages, grammar changes and the way you speak right now will be almost unrecognizable in 500+ years.
