But If you don't like graphics then Caves of Qud is quality

The game very much encourages you to try weird things; like making a wall sentient then having the wall follow you around as a companion, because why not?
that was a game and a half for replaying.
You basically fight through the storyline and unlock characters to replay the game with again and again.
It had a good difficulty and you could 'feel' your character getting stronger the more bosses it defeats.
You face Lu Bu?
Don't do it on your first playthrough unless your an arcade wizard.
You completed the game a few times with your character say Xiahou Dun?
Now fight Lu Bu and see if you can beat him on the battlefield or just go the other path in the battle to your goal of Dong Zhou.
-yes its old and yes its good.
Dynasty Empires was good but let down by how easy the common soldiers were and that the officers were overpowered in a few hits on you could finish you despite having thousands and thousands more soldiers than him remaining and you had landed 100s on him. (memory says this was on the harder difficulty).
So as much as its great to Conquer China with your own custom character or well known warlord I would have to say the much earlier Dynasty Warriors 2 would be the better one for replay value.
But anyway, 4X strategy games usually have plenty of replay value.
Stuff like Kenshi and Mount & Blade have no story, so basically you're playing through your own made up story. Plenty of room to play things differently each time.
And I guess some casual games like Bejeweld or tetris, just upping your own scores.
yes Mount and Blade Warband is good - not played just mount and blade.
Warband you can change how significant you are in a battle want it to be the hero? make it so there are fewer soldiers in the battle at once.
Want to be slightly more mortal then increase the numbers of soldiers on the battlefield.
The difficulty settings also can change how the game plays.
this makes me want to have a game of it now actually....
If you prefer single player then Skyrim, Fallout 4 or Fallout New Vegas, with or without mods, they are big enough to explore for years.
Insurgency might also appeal to you, it's also co-op.
I had put it on my wishlist a long time ago and never thought about it again...
I prefer couch coop but there we have a decent list of favorite games... mostly console games like 'Wrath Unleashed', Tony Hawk's pro skater, NHL and some more.
And I tried 'Left 4 Dead' several times but it seems I've some lack of skills there.
BTW:
I can't answer the console games as I don't use one, but I know that a lot of Steam users do, so they will be able to give you much more help than I can.
The 'lack of skill' is the same for all of us, we all have to learn
If you enjoy the game, keep practising and your skill level will improve. I learned from other players, newbies might learn from me, rinse and repeat.
or wathever rpg
Maybe I give it another try... can you recommend a good stage for beginners?
I've tried the (I think it was called...) "Hotel"?! stage but there are so many z's suddenly...
