"Sliders" TV Show
I just started rewatching Sliders... I've already seen most of the show at least once, but that was a long time ago, mostly when we were videotaping it first run.

NOTE: SPOILERS AHEAD

In the Pilot, they slide out too early, and effectively lose their way back to Earth.

Everything I can find so far about the later episodes explains that they'll get stuck for 20+ (29.7) years if they don't slide out in time, but...

In the Pilot they slide out EARLY. And the only thing that goes wrong is that it means they can't find their way back to their original Earth.

But once "the damage is done" and they've lost their easy way back, Why can't they slider out of other Earths EARLY to avoid whatever is trying to kill them or whatever else is going wrong?

Again, in the Pilot, they slide out Early. Then they keep talking about how they can't slide out late.

But I can't find (or currently remember) why they can't slide out EARLY after they already messed up their safe-slide home! (In S1.E3 "Fever" they don't want to leave early, but in S1.E4, their worried about being killed and say they're stuck there for 70+ hours, so again, why can't they slide out early?)

Does anyone know or remember why they can't slide out EARLY again?

I noticed they mentioned "the timer recharging"... is that the only answer, one that they just kind of stuck in with no explaination to why or to what it means or why it didn't apply to the early slide in the Pilot?

At any rate, if anyone has more details about why they could slide out early in the Pilot but act like it's impossible later on, please let me know.

Thanks.

I didn't like the cromags or having only one core character for the final episode.

The actor playing the professor was right in saying the stories were getting bad. The main male and female characters leaving killed what little was left of the show.

I like the talk primarily because the former main character from Sliders is so funny.

I want to get seasons 1-3 I guess...
I think they wanted to mix stuff up due to what I assume were bad ratings.

Not sure if you noticed, but Season 3 was pretty long - 25 episode I think.

As I said before, since they're not claiming health problems or whatever for Professor actor, his mid-season departure was probably due to wanting to adding Maggie who is younger and probably added what they considered to be a more attractive female than Wade to the cast. (Oh.. duh... or maybe they wanted a 2-female 2-male cast... see immediately below.)

Wade's departure lined up with the switch from FOX to SyFi, so that probably gave her the chance to ask for more money. My guess is that the writers decided to kill her off, and she just wanted more money for the "kill Wade off" episode she refused to do for whatever amount of money they offered her, but since she probably didn't have a contract, maybe the actress (actually, in the RL, the actress's agent) wanted too much money to stay on.

BTW... if you want to see what I consider to the extreme example of an actor wanting too much money (at least among the shows I know... largely Sci-fi) check out Smallville. After Season 5 when almost all TV contracts are up, the lead actor kept wanting more and more money until only the he and one other member of the cast remained. The the remaining cast member was (I think) the only one that wasn't actually based on a DC comic-book character, so she was probably the one working for lowest amount of money being far more expendable than all the other characters they did away with. Seriously... "Smallville" without Ma and Pa Kent, Lois Lane or Lex Luthor? Sorry for the spoiler, but yup, they did it.

I don't know if Rys-Davies left due health problems. He wasn't that old yet, tho. He even starred a couple of years later in LOTR as Gimli, so his fame was not dwindling down. Also sure he has done some other movies meanwhile, and also after LOTR. He's one of the best actors Hollywood ever had. He purely left the show cause he was not content with the scripts during season 3. There were purely movie-ripoffs. So they decided to kill him off in Exodus Part 2. Then he was replaced by Karie Wuher. Then after seasons 4 Sabrina LLoyd left due same reasons. There were also rumors she was a bit jealous toward Wurher, but who knows. In the end. Season 3 was the worst season of Sliders. Season 4 had great episodes and Jerry's brother was also some fresh breath, tho. Season 5, yeah.. You like it or hate it. I prefer the original cast cause the harmony/chemi between them was so awesome. Nonetheless, there are a couple of great episodes to name from Season 3 - 5. If the cromaggs didn't were a thing, and the writers did more their best I think the show could have received a legendary cultclassic status. Now most people cherish season 1 - 2 the most, and some even season 4. Then there's a couple of % that like 3 and 5 as well. In the end they killed a great show that could have reached the same status as Dawson's Creek, Star Trek NG, D9, Enterprise, etc etc. Imho, personally I think seasons 1 & 2 are one of the greatest creations Fox has published.

I picked up the first 2 seasons off Amazon for under $20.

I looked it up on the international movie database and enjoyed a review stating if you want to watch it, buy the first two season set, which I just did, and never watch the next three seasons. Will do.

3 and 4 are not bad per se, but 1 & 2 are just too good. You will enjoy it. Put your tv in 4:3 mode, so you're watching how it should be. In 16:9 everything stretch out. Perfectly you have to watch it on a CRT TV.

You bought it from Amazon?

So if you want to watch it 6 years from now, you just need to upgrade to MS-Windows 16.3?

(Or did you do the safe thing and get it on DVD?)

Some people on this thread didn't believe that the Kro-Mags took over the Earth from the Pilot Episode ("Earth Prime") or that Quinn learns he's not from that World.

I just watched that episode... if you're curious, it's the first episode of Season 4, which is also the first episode that was broadcast on Sci-Fi after it left FOX.

Update: I idioticly (dyslexicly actually) wrote "Season 1" before. It's the start of Season 4.

Quinn was not nearly as smart as he thought, they did arrive on his homeworld but the gate squeaking was the stupidest test of which Earth they were on. He didn't factor in someone oiling the gate on that Earth, come to think of it on any Earth. So that was stupid.

Also does the Kromagg thing mean they bonked his mum? I think they found her in a breeding camp so I guess that is true.

Wade became a head in a box

Yeah, it's stupid, but it was just 1 year after the first slide, so this gate was squaeking for years, since he was younger, so yeah, I would use the same test as well.
This mom, which was not his biological mom, was in capture. Not in a breedingcamp. I think eventually she was killed (off-screen)

I mustn't have remembered it right, I thought she and Wade, and a few others were in breeding camps where the Maggs bred with human females.

According to this recap Wade was at one point in a breeding camp

Reading "they need to slide out early" just...

I'm sorry. It's so out of context for me since I haven't seen the TV show

He wasn't being stupid. He was very pressed for time and had to make an educated guess. The timer had less than 2 minutes on it and to miss the slide meant they would be stuck on that world for 29 years or whatever.

But it wasn't just the gate. They not found it suspicious that O.J. was being tried for murder, and a ball game playoff was also suspicious. But on top of that, the biggest was actually that one of the teams was playing from the wrong city. The fact that all 3 appeared on the first page (and only page) of a newspaper Remy read was pretty suspicious.

Muffin, do you still think Quinn was being stupid, or is there something different that you would have done? He had already seen his Mom actually exactly like his Mom on another would, so a few seconds to check her personality would have helped.

Oh... and technically speaking, we still don't even know if that was his "home" world ("Earth Prime", the one Remy and Wade were born on, the one from the Pilot episode.) We know that the 3 sport changes all matched real-world sports changes, but his world isn't the same as ours (unless the Cromags have started taking over our real world decades ago - I haven't heard that mentioned in the news yet.)

If you want to read further into it, O.J. was already arrested when they first slid out, and pretty much everyone here knew about it. So one could easily argue that the world Remy and Wade came from wasn't one where O.J. was tried for murder, and so that world with the recently-oiled gate wasn't the same world they were looking for.

That said, I was just watching S4-E14 ("Mother than Child") and Quinn was an idiot in the middle of the episode, although they corrected his obvious mistake by the end of the episode.

It's been a while since I watched any Sliders but what did Quinn do in Mother And Child to make him an idiot?

Need to buy a DVD/Blueray-player and watch the first 2 or maybe 4 seasons again on my Sony PVM. I get goosebumps when I read this topic.

I can't answer that one without a spoiler. The Sliders had rescued a woman and her half-cromag child from a breeder camp and returned to the Mother's world which had drove the Cromags away. [obviously a spoiler follows]

Then Daddy-Cromag slides in wearing a Hazmat suit, and wants the baby back. They tell him that world drove the Cromags out by inventing a Cromag-specific virus, but that there is an antidote just in case the virus were to cross other to humans and other life forms. So Quinn and the other sliders are total idiots and believe Daddy-Cromag that he just wants the antidote to cure his son, and he's not going to try to steal the antidote and kid back to his world to innoculate all Cromags and destroy the world. So they work together to get the antidote, and surprise: Daddy Cromag tried to double cross them, and steal the kid and antidote so the Cromags can come back and destroy the world. Who would have suspected that? In the end, the Sliders just barely stop him a few feet away from the Portal that would have brought him, and his cure back to his world. Actually, the slider probably should have also cut up the corpse but didn't. Although not without some risk,if they did, maybe the Virus in his tissues could have been replicated and saved other worlds too.

Well I guess if they didn't do idiotic things we'd have no drama.

I do remember one episode where they were leaving an Earth that had giant insects flying towards them and a few made it into the portal, and they briefly landed on one world before sliding again, that poor planet they just left probably is doomed now because those insects would have grown and multiplied and become a plague.

I liked the episode Breeders with the parasite that made people horny
