(Postponed) EU to greenlight Chat Control regulation on June 20th
Edit: The vote has been postponed!

https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/chat-control-vote-postponed-huge-success/

The dystopian set of regulations that would enable active scanning of messages and media on everyone's devices, even in encrypted form, is set to be greenlit in 2 days, on June 20th.

This post goes in detail about this topic. A handful of countries have not decided yet. Take action now!

More details about Chat Control:

I am posting this here as a PSA to anyone from EU to raise awareness. I know I've been inactive lately, and that is unlikely to change, but I felt this was important to discuss.

All jokes aside, if plausible citizens around the EU should fight back against this, via all diplomatic ways possible. Wish y'all the best of luck in the good fight :insfist:

Always seen the EU superstate as corrupt, power hungry and money hungry but then again politicians are the same the world over. All this laughing at the EU over this is completely hypocritical considering the way the US politicians have gone after net neutrality for example.

Anyway, back to calling them out as the EUSSR again.

United States of America and United States of sovjet Russia with the United States of Europe and the united states of China with the United arabic world creates the united world of united States of planet earth. With exception of Africa.

States of the United Kingdom.

Been saying this for a very long time. Governments don't like the people being free. They have been lagging years behind but they will introduce laws to make sure we are controlled in what we see and do.

they're obviously not gonna use this to spy on regular conversations

The issue is all these might be foundation to control a lot of other stuff... when they start fining people because they talk against whatever government issue just by chatting it naively then you may care, and then it's too late. The big picture is always say no to everything social control related. It's against human rights and that's it. It does not matter how they name it to fool people. You never know where all of this might take the world. We should say now now, not when suddenly the next measure does affect you.

Glad we had our 1776.

Maybe Europe would benefit from having a 1776 of their own...
Patriot act and FBI would have a word with you, i you dont mind, of course. D'you remember all the arabs put in cells for interrogation by Homeland security after 9/11 ? Misplaced nationalism is misplaced.

They already do this without public knowledge.
If any of you use Meta and have not actively protested it, then all your chat, images (even private ones) etc.. is used to feed their AI and it can use yoru content at any time.
Exactly, and some gov agencies have their backdoors already.

Whenever I hear people shout "peace and free-market" it sounds like corporate slavery to me.
Aye, we are in agreement on that.

No unfortunately not. Because criminals will hire people that know how to not get scanned. And there is a serious risk the scan database becomes compromised and than we have a privacy disaster most people will never be able to recover from.

Professionals will not be hit by this as are criminals. I can have my data transferred through entire owned infrastructures which are not required by law to handle these kind of requests because they are to small. I can rebuild my OS to drop any request on device without alerting any one. In fact most people already toke measures years ago when we started to hear the ambition from governments to implement this.

And criminals will use the fear to create a new type of extortion strategy. Instead of the we have seen you visiting naughty sites and have your webcam data they will simply threaten in a manner like if you do not pay X we will have you get reported for CP material.

And yes they can do that if malware gets installed or by simply spoofing traffic.

And than we are not even mentioning yet what would happen if a state decides to change the data check instead of CP materials to certain signs like LGBTQ community, Someone saying f the government.

And again people with understanding of this on a professional level will not be affected for the most part. It will be your grandma who has zero clue about the internet it will be you if you have no IT knowledge besides installing a game and using basic computer functions.

And when the majority of people with knowledge about this say this is a really really bad idea it might be wise to take that into consideration because the governments surely have no knowledge of this. They can not even apply basic security on there own infrastructure for the most part and you are going to trust them with all your data.

And those who say it is just on device scan no it is not. To have this working it needs to send and retrieve data. The processing happens on the device the exchange does not.
And with the high probability of false positives which we know because this has been a problem for a decade now a lot more data will be processed than people think.

And no one ever without constant auditing can guarantee this will not be misused even by those who are trusted to handle the reports.

but that already exists, and when it happens you should contact the police
Ah yes, because the local police can totally take care of that.

That is incorrect. Anyhow, is this yet another piece of "regulation" that will not affect Steam or Steam users?
