is STEAM selling "NEXT-GEN" Games?
This is my first time as a PC gamer that i am stuck in between the transition of "Next-Gen" and "Current-Gen" Consoles. It seems like a game like Ghosts is still stuck in the "Current-Gen" format for the PC. AS i am getting a lot of stuttering and low textures. Even when i put it on max setting the textures still seem really low. I am able to run all games Such as Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, and even Ghosts on Max setting, So my question is If i was going to buy Assasins Creed Black Flag. Should i be expecting PS3 quality or PS4. How do they determine when a PC game becomes "Next-Gen" if it is developed for both generations. And if anyone else is experiencing a problem with ghosts please let me know.

Yes. Steam is selling next-gen games. You can determine this by looking into the game's steam forums and see how many are complaining about the performance.

more performance complains = more next-gen

Also keep in mind that next-gen is min CPU ~4 cores @ 3.5 GHz, from own experience.

Apparently a patch was released 2 days ago to fix these tech problems for the PC version:

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2308141/infinity-ward-fixes-call-of-duty-ghosts-issues

I haven't heard about issues with Assasins Creed Black Flag. Sometimes developers put more effort into the console version, and gamers won't know until release day.
For some reason i do not think i got the patch. I installed the game on 11/18 and it does have Auto-Update on.
@vit What i am trying to say is the game runs on max setting for Ghosts. It just seems like max setting on the PC are way under what they should be. It seem stuck on

Unless you post screenshots of all your in-game graphics settings and driver graphics settings, nobody will ever be able to assist you.
There is a screenshot of some of the game. Everytime i select Optimal Video on the Ghosts Menu it automatically puts everything to Extra
There is no next gen, its entirely a marketing term, pc hardware refreshes every 6 months or so, what what "gen" is it in pc world?

Cod ghosts runs poorly because they botched the port horribly and the engine is just a massivley patched quake 3 engine, its not "next gen". The term used to have meaning, like old consoles not being able to do certain things like fsaa or HDR or whatever, but now, what do the new consoles do graphically that is next gen or beyond the pc? Nothing, I guess they are finally at the current direct x level thats all.

Games like battlefield finally take advantage of modern gpu feature set, cod ghosts, not so much. If your pc doesn't run cod, it doesn't mean anything, their ram requirement was proven false, and its just generally a botched release.

Hey MA thanks for the link. Its not that my PC cant run CoD im just trying to understand why it looked like PS3 quality on a PC that can run much more powerful games on max settings. I was trying to figure out if it was not meant to look better on the PC than on the new systems or if they were only giving us the "current-gen" iteration of the game.

It is a console port. Most games, that are not PC only, tend to be a copy and paste of the console version. Some go the extra mile and update the graphics and UI, some are lazy and don't update much of anything.

This is most likely the latter.

Add a tiny bit, up the system requirements, make more money selling the game before why get around to doing what really needs to be done.

Yea it was a terrible console port they rushed out to hit the console releases this month. COD runs on a patched to hell quake 3 engine, so its hardly impressive to begin with but this rush made it so much worse, and i'm sure the men in suits looked at it and decided that even if it were fully baked, it would look bad against the competition so they might as well just throw it out there and recover some losses even if it was a flaming turd. Basically they put zero work into the pc port, the "fake" 6gb ram requirement just means they did zero optimization or testing on anything but the most bloated requirement, and just set the bar really high so they could release an unfinished product and hide behind the requirement.

Put it this way, battlefield 4 which is obviously next gen in that it uses the new features of modern graphics card can run on 4gb ram systems. COD ghosts runs on 256MB consoles like the 360 and ps3, meaning the base game engine doesn't need much, and why would it, fps game engine gameplay hasn't changed in a decade or more now in any real way... pc's usually have very flexible requirements because you can always turn features off, but again, they just didn't have time or bother to test ...so they released an unfinished unpolished product.

What's "next gen" supposed to mean? That's a term that's applied to consoles -- when the PS3 is replaced by the PS4, or the XBox360 is replaced with the XBox1 it's a clear step to a new model generation. Hence the "next gen" term.

This is also translated to games -- a game for the PS4 or XBox1 is generally referred to as "next gen" because it's for the "next gen" consoles.

The use of these terms will probably diminish as the "next gen" consoles become more commonplace. In a while, what's now "next gen" will be just the current consoles, while PS3 and XBox360 will be more like "previous gen". Marketing doesn't like terms like "previous", "old" or "outdated" (unless they are describing competing products), though, so they'll probably come up with something different to describe it, like "classic".

This doesn't apply to PC games at all, or at least "almost not". One could use such terms to distinguish games using D3D9, D3D10 and D3D11 features, but it's not done. There is no "next gen" on PCs as there is no clean cut -- improvements are gradual and there's a wide range of machines out there that are all "current".

What you will see, of course, is that console ports will improve: a PC port of a XBox360 game is (usually) doing the same things and looks the same as the XBox360 game. So, taking a "next gen" XBox1 game and porting it will produce better results as well.

For games that aren't console ports, nothing will change. For games that support a wide range of graphics capabilities it really depends on how the game was set up: if the PC version was the "best version" anyway and just scaled down to the consoles, nothing will change. If the console version was the one used to actually define the game, and that gets scaled up to "next gen" consoles, the PC version will get better too.
