general anime/manga thread
a thread dedicated to talking about anime/manga in general (also don't want to bother making a "what (season) (year) anime are you watching?" every 3 months)

anyways Re:Zero season 3 has been very kino so far, best anime season of 2024/2025 imo. 2 episodes left as Arc 6 will now be it's own season.

Just some thoughts:

Just got a Crunchyroll subscription, watching the Naruto series from the beginning.

I saw it many years ago, when you could still see them on YouTube, and quit right when Shippuden first came out, and it's been so long I've forgotten the whole story.

I don't watch anime, hardly ever -- in fact not since way back then, other than the Ghibli films, and even for those it's been a long time. All I've seen other than those are a couple of films and a brief stint watching the original DBZ on VHS with friends even further back.

What impresses me most (and I'm only on S1:E7 of the original Naruto from like 2002 or so) is the artistry, and the focus on it... techniques like quiet camera shots of rivers and woods between scenes, with no sound but birds chirping, are very common in anime. From what I remember that's one of the things that impressed me most about the Ghost in the Shell movie, which was made even further back in I think 1994 -- just quiet, artistic still shots from time to time with nothing going on in them, like a sort of meditation moment for the viewer, establishing and pulling you into the atmosphere.

You'd be hard pressed to find anything like these shots in Western animation. The only film -- not even animation -- I can remember this technique being used to any great extent was the original Ang Lee Hulk movie, which had lots of these segues; just quiet shots of the desert and nature in between all the action and storytelling.

Also, although I've never read any manga in my 55 years, I do understand some of the drawing techniques for showing emotion which are unheard of in Western media, and I'd love to find a good guide showing just what each of these are -- like when the artist shades over the whole top half of a character's face for when the character is having dark thoughts, for instance. The only instance I can think of that resembles this is when Charles Schulz drew thought bubbles in the Charlie Brown comics that were filled with dark scribbles instead of words.

At 55 there really isn't enough time left for me to watch "all the anime" but I do want to at least get in a complete watching of all the Naruto shows, so I started yesterday. After that I'll ask for recommendations.

Jjk is so overrated
Last thing I've watched was Fatal Fury movies, they're what you'd expect from a video game adaptation but in a good way.

Corny as hell but they have a heart.

if you are looking for more corny, but extremely excellent fighting game anime ovas:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tekken:_The_Motion_Picture
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_Alpha:_The_Animation
I'm currently reading a few titles, but at a slow pace, since volumes are coming out every several months. "Frieren", "How do we relationship?" and "My dress-up darling". Very hard to obtain paperback issues since "Book Depository" was closed down and I can't find a store/site which delivers to Serbia without exorbitant costs. So I have to rely to trips abroad to obtain volumes as well as e-books, which I don't really like.

I've seen Darkstalkers, aside from animation it was kinda boring. Hsien'Ko's muscles were a sight to behold and definitely a highlight, but aside from her and Donovan I was mostly bored.

I watched Alpha a loooooooooong time ago and all I remember is Zangief beating the daylights out of some random kid lmao

Haven't seen anything Tekken related since I never was too much into it.

more about the aesthetic for me, i adore how 80s/90s anime looked. the dark shading, the more realistic proportions. also yeah, THOSE ARMS :reheart:

alpha is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great lol, it is filled to the brim with memes.

the tekken film is generally just a good anime film imo, no real appreciation or interest in tekken required. it is violent, over the top, and short. just a good little watch.

only anime adapted from vidya I watched was the Pokemon one which I haven't watched in years and a few of it's movies, Yo-kai Watch along with it's movie, the Atelier Ryza one, and the Blue Archive one.

Huh, neat, I wasn't even aware of its existence, I thought you were referring to the live action film. I also know there's a show on Netflix but this is news to me.
Just watching Arslan, to see if it can convince me to pay for the overpriced steam game.

So far it has not. lol

Haven't watched the first season yet but have planned after I'm done watching what I'm currently binge watching

huh, apparently the whole thing is just on youtube lol. if you ever have a spare hour, give it a watch! fun film.

I just found out about One Punch Man season 3. It's my favorite anime so I'm very excited.
