Free as in gratis there is Odysee.
For free as in libre, there is PeerTube.

There are other platforms too. Bing them, or search on Ecosia for related substitutes.

FUTO came out with an app that doesn't actually host video but coalesces a creator's multiple presences (YouTube, twitch, peertube, odyssey, etc.) Into a single feed. It's called Grayjay: https://grayjay.app/

PS no ads, free (as in libre), and tries to eliminate deplatforming

I'm not paying a subscription to block their ads. If they wanted that, they should have marketed it that way to begin with. Their ads are low effort, scam ads, that borderline being misleading and illegal, atleast in Australia. Offering goods and services which are immoral, illegal, misleading. If youtube actually had quality ads, it would be fine, but what they do is slap you with either garbage scams, or 50 minutes ads. All in all, YT as a platform is predatory.

Considering it's a mobile app only, for a desktop solution, I recommend setting up an RSS reader application, then adding RSS feeds of all channels you want to watch videos from into the list.

I am unsure if YouTube still allows aggregating data like that, but Invidious instances[invidious.io] do.

I'd imagine that not every platform provides RSS feeds, but there are solutions like RSS-Bridge[rss-bridge.github.io] for that.

In any case, using a feed this way addresses the concern of relying on a single platform since you can mix and match feeds from any platform, and deplatforming such that you would know if a channel goes under if new videos stop releasing for a long time.

Of course, don't hesitate to use RSS for other purposes too. If you want to aggregate news without, say, relying on Google to do it, be your own newsagent by reading only the feeds of news websites you trust. Great for blogs too.

Is that why youtube has been getting funky lately? I've not got the warning yet but it just seems to bug out a bit more than usual.

That and ♥♥♥♥ youtube for putting some videos @ 1080p behind a premium paywall.
