With that said, I think Astro Bot deserved the win. It's a better Mario game than any Mario game ever actually released. And, best of all, there was absolutely zero political garbage surrounding that game. It was pure fun mixed with a celebration of gaming nostalgia, reminding us what gaming used to be like before mentally ill activists and grifters infested the industry.
Better then any Mario game however? No, I'm sorry but no.

First thing I note is ...were those REALLY the best games they could find for 2014?
Another reason to ignore GoTY awards.
Black Myth Wukong is just a clone of Dark Souls.
The Gaming Industry is dying, full stop.
And no, it's not because of "woke DEIness", it's the lack of sustainability.
Developers keep trying to cram better graphics into their games and keep chasing the same trends.
The development for Spider-Man 2 cost 315 million dollars. That's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane, and the game isn't even that different from the first game.
The remaster of the first game cost only 11 million.
Costs are only going up.
Also, these types of games seem to be the only types of games people want to make anymore. Dark Souls and The Last of Us have poisoned the gaming landscape. They are great games but they made developers learn the wrong lessons. Now every game is trying to be it.
Infact, Sony shut down Japan Studio, who literally made some of the greatest Playstation games and some of the greatest games ever made.
You know how some people complain Sony has no variety anymore? They used to. But most of that variety came from Japan Studio
Japan Studio ended up creating: Ape Escape, Legend of Dragoon, Fantavision, Ico, Siren, Shadow of the Colossus, LocoRoco, Gravity Rush, The Last Guardian, and the original Astro's Rescue Mission for PS4, when Japan Studio shut down, the team that made Astro remained, Team Asobi.
So the fact that the last remnant of Japan Studio made a game that is actually ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ different from all the other triple A slop coming out, to the point where it swept the game awards, actually makes me have hope that the gaming industry can move away from the "Soulslike over the shoulder 3rd person emotionally driven narrative game" genre and actually get back to making really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ diverse games.
