I remember I read the IGN's article and I think it is their goal is to get their attention from us, because we ignored them and didn't care about them.
Other articles say they were using it as a demo to try and sell a DDOS service. Show how effective it is against large companies and get people to pay to use it.
If they would go DDOS to attack gaming companies, then it would damage and cost no more than million dollars. Possibly more.
If they overheat too quickly trying to deal with all the junk being sent to them, they can be damaged. Some components may even get fried.

It turns out they were horrible at their own security. Their clients information was left wide open for anyone to view and they basicaly stold the code fome some other DDOS service.

Looks like Kim Dotcom offered the LS to stop attacking XBL and PSN if he threatend to terminate the voucher. But he forget to mention about Steam.
