Does your mouse have side buttons?
Does your mouse have buttons on the side, commonly known as Mouse4 and Mouse5? Mine does.

I wish more developers would start supporting those buttons. A decent amount already do, but it's kinda annoying when I'm playing a game and I can't map them to anything.

If your mouse has side buttons, for what do you use them? I use mine in Firefox for going to my previous page or the next page. Mouse 4 is go back, Mouse 5 is go forward.

In most games, Mouse5 is Sprint or Run, and Mouse4 is crouch.

In Darksiders 2, Mouse 5 is Dodge, Mouse 4 is Walk.

In Half Life 2, Mouse 4 is crouch, Mouse 5 is Reload.

Mine does. I use M4 for my sights/aiming/zoom and M5 as my melee.

I haven't come across many games that won't allow you to remap things to those buttons, unless it was one that didn't allow for mouse re-mapping at all.

You know what it does...

Wonder what they're for...

It's up to you to decide for what they are to be used.

If it's a Logitech mouse, you can download the program SetPoint and configure those buttons to do whatever you want. That can cause some issues with games, though, so I suggest setting the default to be "Do Nothing" and then set application specific stuff.

Razer Deathadder. I use them for game specific actions, like summon Deathtrap in Borderlands 2. I'm too used to tapping 'E' for use and spacebar for jump, even though they could actually work better with the mouse.

I have a mouse with side buttons. It's gathering dust in my spare parts drawer. I could never get the hang of using it without accidentally clicking the side buttons.

Yep, it varies from game to game but in FPS I map one for reloading, grenades and walking.
For RTS I just map them to quick select buildings.

It really depends on where exactly the side buttons are. For instance, my Logitech M510 mouse has a nice, large rubber area just below the side buttons on which you can rest your thumb without having to worry about pressing either button.

I have them, but M4 keeps breaking all the time so it's pointless to map anything to it for me.

I can't stand not having my thumb buttons now.
It's so handy as a back/forward button (no more navigating to the corner of windows and browsers), but on the Razer Deathadder the mouse 5 is situated a bit too far forward for my hands to reach quickly during gaming sessions.
I think it's a combo of my hands being smaller than whatever the mouse was designed for, and the way I hold the mouse.

The Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 had both thumb buttons in the perfect spot for my thumb, but that mouse died on me, and last I looked they weren't as advanced as the Deathadder (maybe that's changed), so I went with the Deathadder for my new mouse.
I'll look into other mice next time

Gigabyte software allows you to set the side buttons to keyboard keys too, so you can use the side buttons even if the game doesn't support M4/5

Also I like how I can bound keys to the mouse wheel left/right scroll

Yep, Razer Deathadder. But I don't use them very often, usually just to switch weapons, or throw grenades.
Had 2 of them, can not recommend.

I had to use the side buttons for World of Warcraft, playing as a warrior needed 2 keys at the same time which was very annoying.

mouse 4 is for meleeing and mouse 5 is for whatever action is uncommon in my normal games, like flashlight or some other little fuction that I don't really use. the click on mouse will is reload guns or brings up my pipboy or equivelant. :mkb::HOSTAGE:

So I would be accidentally flashlighting allies in the face and taking swings at them with my chainsaw.
