Why Punishing People With Exercise Is Stupid
In the military, and sometimes in schools, people often punish people by making them do exercises such as pushups.

The reason that's stupid is because you're teaching them to hate exercise, you should teach them to ENJOY exercise!

(Instructor) "If anyone gives me any backtalk, your going to go to the corner a do pushups!

(Student) "backtalks"

(Instructor) Go to the corner and do pushups! Let that be an example for the rest of you! If you don't want to do pushups you shouldn't backtalk me!

(Second Student) I actually WANT to do pushups because I'm an athlete and trying to become stronger for my sport, so I'm going to do pushups alongside the first student who's being punished

(Instructor) WHY ARE YOU DOING PUSHUPS WHEN YOU'RE NOT BEING PUNISHED!?

(Second Student) because I want to become stronger...

(Instructor) YOUR MAKING ME LOOK BAD!

IF YOU DO PUSHUPS WHEN NOT BEING PUNISHED IT MAKES IT SEEM LIKE ITS NOT A PUNISHMENT! YOU SHOULD BE TRYING TO "AVOID" DOING PUSHUPS!

It's supposed to teach you not to do the thing you got in trouble for.

Exercise is never fun unless it's a game. It's work. You're literally working your body.

When I was a kid we used to have to stay after and copy dictionary pages. Quit crying and enjoy your exercise that you think is fun.
Is that you John Wayne is this me.

Don't punish. Remove.

;)
Incorrect... people are punished with exercise to teach them discipline.

Obey your superiors and you won't be punished, it's that simple.

It's not supposed to make you hate exercise, it's supposed to be a public sign for everyone else that you f'ed up.

The problem with that is, what do you do with the people who actually "WANTS" to exercise in order to get stronger?

Like I said before, the instructor would accuse the person who likes to exercise of making him look bad.
Well they used to hit people but found some people liked being hit.

This is kind of the lesser of two fetishes

A good leader knows how to punish properly...

Punish those who hate exercise with exercise and those who love exercise will be barred from doing exactly that.

Pulling a barve is one of the most important things you can teach kids in school now a days.

YOU! SOLDIER TO THE LEFT! DROP AND GIVE ME 50!

YOU! SOLDIER ON THE RIGHT! GO TAKE A NAP!

Exactly... you'd be surprised how effective selective punishment really is...

I served in the Bundeswehr for one year as per the "Freiwilligenjahr" option; that option allows you to serve in the German military for one year, afterwards you may retire from the sevice to do something else.

There were two guys; one guy who hated exercise, he was incredibly lazy... only doing the bare minimum; the other one was one of those exercise freaks who couldnt get enough.

The commander told the one who hated it to go run around the base five times; the one who loved it was grounded and ordered to spent the next 72 hours in the barracks... on his bed.

Safe to say, they both... adjusted themselves accordingly.

I can see how it could happen like you're saying, but it can also not discourage them.

In Basic, it sucked to have to do it, but it also became something of a competition and joke towards the end.

Same thing happened when I would make my kids do the front lean and rest position or hold their arms out.

I think what really makes them upset as punishment is that they knew they did something wrong and that you were telling them to do ANYTHING that isn't what they want to be doing. It isn't the actual punishment.

And I'd rather they learn how strong their body can be than stand in some corner.

I think we all know you have to discourage certain behaviors, so until someone presents a better way to get a young child to learn, I'll stick to making them do exercises. Eventually they do end up enjoying it. From my experience... Also, when having them exercise you're also paying attention to them. Just making them go in their bedroom or stand in a corner is just being lazy as a parent. Even if it's teaching them, that's still time they are spending with you. And so long as you aren't being an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, they will love that.

Don't forget the classic 'digging a hole and filling it in again'. It's both boring as ♥♥♥♥ and exercise at the same time.

Ah, yes... even better:

Dig a hole in the sand... 🤣
while i would agree with you that teaching young people that exercise is fun rather than a punishment is a wise idea for overall healths of our populations, i think there can be wisdom in using it in a "punishing" sense in military settings.

it is not just being a punishment, it is meant to help you become disciplined. to follow orders, to not mess about and defy your co. this is important in military culture, because defying orders and lax attitudes are often getting people hurt or killed in war.
