What's with the Disco Elysium drama? (Writer of the game now broke)
One of the writers behind the game wants to get the rights of his game back and wants 100k to defend themselves in court and to pay other expenses.

Its the usual that a product of someone's 9-5 turned to be profitable and then they kicked the people behind it out. I dont think its news

Their game was acclaimed but not a huge seller.

Seems right to me.

IIRC the group who wrote the game and came up with the world no longer have rights, the people with the money in the company do. There was a big breakup after the games somewhat sucsess and now there like 2 (3?) Different games from various people all connected who wanna make a sequel.

I think ZA/UM started as a sort of art collective or something. Someone they eventually partnered with for business purposes pulled some shenanigans, claiming ownership over the Disco Elysium IP while ousting the original creatives. No idea how legit any of it was.

Wow, that's really interesting.
It is one of those "look at how intellectual we are" experiences and I got stuck very quickly not knowing how to progress and instead of looking up a guide went back to more action-oriented games. IIRC it has gender wokeism.

What did you expect from commie game with a fan base that thinks they're intellectual while in reality being brain-dead most of the time

They directly criticize all political spectrums and you can be a fascist if you really wanted too. Even being a communist makes you the butt end of jokes. Sniffing out fellow communists to establish 0.0002% of communism. (This isnt a joke, you sniff out other communists with nose, while your nose tells you this is all in your head) And once they all gather, all they do will argue with each other, the most important part of communism.

You see the political spectrum in all of its extremes because you are playing an alcoholic amnesiac cop with unstable emotions constantly chiming in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane advice.

They devs were comfortable critiquing their own ideology, with the butt end of the communism quest line ending in you being called "You are not communist enough" by another communist.

So it isn't that you make it out to be

The drama comes from the publisher taking the game from the developers. and they split into 3 studios all making their own successor.

You get insulted by the main character's thoughts if you don't choose exciting options, some skills want you to be boring, others want you to honor yourself by sticking your thumb up your ass because it's "authorative" thing to do (If your too proficient in a skill, you will pass high skill checks and appear unhinged. This applies to all skills, it's really interesting to see these dialogues specifically)

you can play the game many ways. A lot of people who boil it down to "it promotes communism" most likely has not played the game or even the communist quest.

Insofar as I recall the venture capitalists who propped up the studio so they could actually make the game, got bought out by much worse venture capitalists, and all but forced every other stakeholder out with a combination of majority control (oops) and making things too unbearable to stay.

The company now sell plastic bags for merch.
