Many reasons. Some think some actions negative effect on the greater society. Some are just sadists and look for things to mess people up over. Some do it because they're simply not comfortable with some things, or their upbringing led them to develop extreme distaste for those things.

They're funny and should be given a pat on the head for effort.
They want a sense of superiority, but unwilling to achieve it themselves so they try to shame others trying to feel better about themselves.
It hurts their feelings so they try to stop it

Depends. Like, there's common sense and then there's a forced "morality". Should a rape victim be able to do an abortion? The common sense says "yes, obviously". But then there are christians.

They're annoying. But so are people who post "edginess" to troll other people's sensitivities.

This does have to do with the provided context, how are they explaining themselves at the time, and how are they explaining themselves at other times.
Another thing is, I'm not completely sure what to imagine under that term.. So, could I ask for the explanation?
Well, to me, it's more of the "you should be or do X" kind of thing that is a problem.

I have no issue with public places having moral rules of conduct.

I do have issue with people telling me how I should raise my children, or trying to influence them to some state standard.

I refer people to the old black and white flick called Sergeant York - a true story.
If you have ever heard the meme "struck by lightening on the plains of Arkansas" it came from this movie. <Steins Gate anime even used it>

Long story short guy finds God, gets drafted, and does not want to kill/fight.
At one point in a conversation with his senior officer he gets told one of the things about American Freedom is the Right to raise your children in your own beliefs. This really struck home as what America should stand for. Freedom to believe your own things, while respecting others differences. We are all equal in the end.

Ignoring them works wonders, but only if they notice enough to complain about it. :aos2nanako:

As long as nobody is paying them to act like the morality police, we are all free to tell them to piss off and ignore them.
Often enough it seems they want the rest of the world to compensate for their own lack of morality.

They battle oppression by being oppressive. They are so convinced they are doing the right thing, they basically act like the religious zealots that they despise. They demand acceptance and tolerance but are intolerant to other peoples points of view. They are all for inclusion but love to exclude those outside their in group. They are all for representation, but try to cancel anyone who says or does anything that goes against their values.

These people who claim to be some voice of reason and morality are themselves unreasonable and immoral. Long before this cult existed, our society had been shifting away from racism and discrimination. Ironic that when these people started pushing their intolerant ideology onto others that the issues of racism and discrimination came back. This cult basically sent our society back several decades. The problems they were attempting to "correct" actually got worse because of their actions.

If there is a hell, these people would be at the front of the line.

It depends for what reason. If they do so honestly, I consider them a friend. But for any other reason, they do no good.

Interesting way to see it.

I have heard that part of the Nazi reason for going after the Jewish population was to seize assets in economic hard times.

I think economic hard times often are the trigger for such types of actions of prejudice be it against race or belief.
