Plenty of people there will literally not associate with someone who votes the opposite way, regardless of who that person is as a person (putting aside the current political climate, anyway).
Couple this with decades of propaganda about what both parties do and an education system that is severely lacking in most states and politicians who are some of the worst scum on the planet, this is what you end up with when it comes to "discussion" on any political topic (or topics that aren't inherently political, but turn into them).
