Watch out for Google too I guess.... damn.

In what way?
It is going to be cool though... could you imagine, superimposing an eerie gothic Castle Feel in your bedroom.
Screw virtual reality..
Someone should kick..
Someone should start looking into Augmented Reality.

That's where MZ went wrong..... got it.
So if there is anyone here with the ability to get a message through to him.
Tell him that his "Dream" is in augmented reality... Not virtual.
Give virtual up for the sake of all of us. Let the team keep the $400 Mil, just for wasting their time... pull back your monopoly money. And forget this all happened.

I knew it...
All Facebook has to do is slim it down into a pair of shades, and take advantage of their motion detection.

BTW, you better hope you don't see it until they make self driving cars and make it mandatory for EVERYONE to own one.

Don't tell me there will be a 3D farmville where you have to pay 1 dollar for 1 point of "energy"
More proof of what Facebook is planning.

"Fast-forward fourteen years. I'm at Valve – which started its existence by licensing the Quake source code – looking for the next big platform shift, and I conclude that it's augmented reality."

Face-book could really care less about VR... they want the advancements they've made that apply to AR.

I will admit, that it is going to be super ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool.

Well, if you take Google glass, the glasses that the private detective wears in the game Heavy Rain, and this episode[en.wikipedia.org]of Star Trek: TNG, it would seem that AR has the upper hand in these sorts of matters.

However, what's missing in AR is exactly what's missing in every live-action 3D movie compared to CGI movies--field of vision. In CGI, you can get every snowflake, freckle, and cloud in perfect focus in the depth of field. In live action (a/k/a Augmented Reality) you basically have the focal point (i.e. a nose) in high definition...and nothing else.

If you don't know what they have planned yet, then you obviously have no idea how to read the news. They are spelling it out for you. It's literaly in BIG BLACK BOLD LETTERS of what they plan. And the plan is not good for any of the consumers.

Obvious that there is no way FB can make a profit off selling hardware.
They'd need to sell 20 Million Plus units at least... That's not gonna happen. They'll be lucky to sell 2 million. Do you honestly think considering that.... you think MZ is gonna to allow people to have this device completely free of ever having to deal with FB.. How is FB going to re-coup their investment?

Are you a gamer or not. Because if you can't put 2+2 together on this, you've obviously been playing games that don't challenge you?

You don't know what they are planning, I don't know what they are planning; get off your high horse and actually wait for real updates instead of scouring the net for every non-credible rumour. Luckey said no tie-ins with FB for the Rift, I'm more inclined to believe he is more likely to be telling the truth.

Where did you get that 20 million units figure from, and why is it impossible? You do realise there is more interest in the OR's application and not just gamers? You do realise that Facebook actually has a very good history of supporting Open Source projects, which includes a great deal of the OR? But hey, scaremongering is more fun then facts, eh?

Jesus guys, calm down. Take a breath, or lay down in your bed.

Welcome to the internet; there are no calm and measured responses, and everything is expressed through hyperbole. And comparisons to Hitler.

i dont care much now, its not the only kid on the block, customers wont have just the one product to choose, they are already a few others. Still Facebook + John Carmack + Michael Abrash, gona take some time to get used too.

kickstarter backers would very much like refunds, i believe there is some cleaning up to do by palmer, he secretly went and did this and should of answered to kickstarters first its because of them he got to wear he was (ecluding the 75m backer - key broke)

its not all neat and clean tranistion, they left a mess behind, clean up your own mess thats how they can make at least some of it right, give them the refunds....you can afford it

am glad Notch, stood up and drawn his line in the sand and said no thank you. He can because hes his own (Non sell out) free to be himself and what he wants as he knows there are other products out there, dont think for a second SONY wont drop the ball on that one.......they are watching and will engage with him at some point and about ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time too, minecraft to playstation! about time. it will get tricky as he has the deal with microsoft ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (keybroke)

And as always, ♥♥♥♥ mega companys like FACEBOOK, buying up all that i once liked.

ecept SONY, VALVE and a few others.........wow really? yes really, sony is secy (keybroke)

The Andersson & Horowitz backers would have grounds to sue or demand their money back if OR does not produce what they originally were working on: a gaming headset. They almost certainly have legal recourse. But if OR is telling the truth about the purchase, that is what they will produce. Kickstarter "investors" aren't entitled to their money back, they aren't really investors, they are donors and they got their backing gifts ages ago.

Everyone is going on about how weird it is to think John Carmack and Michael Abrash are now working for Facebook, totally ignoring the fact that Carmack sold and then quit id to work for a guy who probably wasn't even born when Quake was first released.

Notch's reaction was more theatre then anything.

The founder is Luckey Palmer. I don't see how privacy would be an issue (pro-tip: don't have important stuff on the same computer you game or use Facebook on), the device's drivers exist on the GPL open source license, so it would be near-impossible for Facebook to sneak in any snooping technology on the OR. Given how many years they spent developing the OR specifically for games, Facebook cannot simply just undo all that.

I don't know if they ever said the company was ever going to be independent forever, very few companies could ever make that claim.

Should Oculus Rift said something to all about wanting to sell out?
Do you?

They could of been a bit more open to wanting to sell to someone, i felt betrayed like many others that backed them only to see what i backed sell out without any prior discussion/thought/census of what it is right, they didn't do any of that they just sold themselves to Facebook.

Now there is a mess, deal breakers everywhere. Not even Wallstreet likes their new aqquistion, points drop for FB.

Sure their are those that would of been also bad to sell too, Microsoft, EA.......no thank you. But their are good companies out their that are loved by gamers.

Valve, meanwhile, would have been the most straightforward marriage for Oculus, as the company which has become the de facto platform holder for PC gaming took charge of the most exciting PC gaming peripheral in years.

It would of been perfect. But thanks to the sneaky backstab move from palmer, it didn't.

Prior to all of this, last week, as Sony squared up to Oculus across the GDC conference schedule, it looked like we were set for a real David and Goliath battle over the future of VR.
Plucky little Oculus, given its first breath of life on Kickstarter struggles to in the race by resurgent behemoth Sony.

Sony, for all its recent troubles, remains perhaps the finest manufacturer of high- quality consumer hardware on earth (second to Apple, perhaps, but with a far broader scope of operations). This was shaping up to be a fascinating fight, one which could be extremely good for VR in general - driving forward standards, igniting competition and generating endless press coverage and awareness along the way.

This week, we're still promised a battle - but it turns out that David, too, is a Goliath.

Goliath versus Goliath it is, then.

Plenty of keyboards have been furiously hammered this week regarding the implications of the deal; Facebook is untrustworthy and creepy;

Facebook's money is the best thing that could have happened to VR; this is a betrayal of an implicit promise to Kickstarter backers;

Kickstarter backers who feel that way clearly didn't understand what they were actually buying; and so on, and so on. I'm still interested in the upcoming battle, though.

What Sony feared, no doubt, was that Oculus would be acquired by a much more aggressive partner - again, the pair mentioned above, Microsoft and Valve, would be top of the list.

This news for me is a deal breaker, certainly OR could of not lied to its community, while they were selling VR at conventions etc on the latest updates they were secretly selling us out to FaceBook, I can look the other way because they are not the only kids on the block and that will only get more crowded.

Keep your Oculus palmer i dont need a sellout, i have options. Good day.

Valve is creating their own VR headset, don't lose hope yet.
