I'm not a fan of moderation, but some things you have to do for legal reasons.
It's fine if it is a small group of regulars, and you only have to worry about "that one guy" occasionally.
So it is fine at first when the sites/forums are small and it was pretty much just a free-for-all with people of similar interests that kept most posts relevant to the forum. Then it got annoying as the sites/forums got bigger and more people came in just to troll post or when the "creepers" started showing up and I ended up spending more time moderating than posting.
And those were adult-only forums...
I couldn't imagine how much of a pain it is to moderate something with a "kids-friendly" rating and wouldn't moderate that even if I was paid to.
So in short, it can be fun when it is a close group of people with similar interests (you don't actually have to moderate much at all), but an absolute nightmare when constant "randos" show up or a site/forum starts getting popular.
I am amazed our little group managed to run for 3 years before it started shrinking.
If someone can schedule it properly, dedicate time and have passion for whatever platform it is, then it could be nice. But lots of people just don't have enough time, or interest - or neither.
Biggest reason I decided not to is because the people I sincerely liked had left, and the role never really suited me all that well.
Perhaps in an alternative universe I decided to take on the position, and my favorite server would still be around? Well, it was never my flavour of tea.
Being moderator and doing it well in one place may not be sufficient enough to do well in another and vice versa.
Applying those rules, the interpretation around them. i'm a bit more qualified than many others who never served in that capacity to state that no moderator is truly impartial despite any claims to the contrary, they will always be clouded by their thoughts, their moods, the rules and how they are seen, the way the rules are processed in a certain way, rules carried over from other game forums into steam and used and of course moderator conduct, which is a thread that lists what moderators can and can not do and where they may need help with, etc.. you won't ever see that, or the automated reports that are generated, most of which are safely ignored because a lot of users don't know how to use the report feature correctly and no action needs to be taken.
Take it from someone who used to be one, it's not worth trying to become one and if you think the level of toxicity on off-topic is bad? you ain't seen nothing until you become a target of abuse from other users who think your judgement is wrong, even though you followed the rules put down exactly and the interpretation is sound.
I wouldn't do it anymore now. It requires certain activity and because of that it can feel like a job. I stopped with such roles because of that.
Great, now you are back when I rarely discuss in here anymore 😄. You've been missed. At least I have.
And for the wise Owl, yes. A long time ago. Wouldn't do it anymore though.
And I don't enjoy banning people either. Nor do I enjoy gossiping behind regular users backs with other mods/admins if a user should be banned or not.
