Gabe Newell is the co-founder of Valve. An independent games developer who also owns the pioneering digital distribution platform...Steam.
Once upon a time there was a great game called Doom. While a fantastic game, Doom had very little in the way of story line or immersion. Doom was succeeded by other games like Duke Nukem and Quake. But Half Life was the game that made the player a part of a story. As Freeman...the player tried to survive a crazy science experiment gone wrong when Aliens overtake the facility. At the time the attention to detail and the way the story flowed without a single cutscene was a remarkable acheivement for video games and Half Life is still regarded as one of the greatest FPS titles ever created.
I am gonna shorten this up.
Then there was Half Life 2 which was also a great game. Along with Half Life 2 Valve gave us Steam. Steam is a digital platform that gives developers security for their games while giving gamers a convenient way to purchase games and keep them updated. At this particular time many devs were sticking to consoles and many people wondered if PC gaming was dying. Valve turned that around with Steam. Gabe Newell was an important part of all of this. So people feel like Gabe Newll played a big part in keeping PC gaming alive.
Look this stuff up. It is interesting
I have a stain on my shirt... :(
It is paint though. ♥♥♥♥ happens. Shouldn't take part in painting a room with your good clothes.
Anway, in your opinion, for which reasons should people like him?
I have a lot of respect for Steam and Valve as companies, because they are not hell bent on ripping their customers off like virtually every other gaming company out there. Sure, they exist to make a profit for themselves, but it feels like they offer an honest service without all the shady rip-offs.
Plus, I've actually been able to profit thanks to the Steam Market. I've got several free games thanks to buying, trading and selling game items. Can't complain about free games!
Because he's a nice guy and he saved PC gaming.
Not to be a ♥♥♥♥. But Steam came out closer to around 2004.
And I joined in November 4th of that year. So close to the maximum years of service!
People like celebrities, just for being a celebrity. Some are only celebrities in a specific circle (such as Gabe Newell) some get very well known by anyone, such as many big actors/actresses.
It isn't so much the person themselves that people like, but the actions/accomplishments that they have achieved, but the sentiment carries over to the individual. A group effort will also have that effect with the “face” of the project. For example, Steam is a group effort by Valve, yet Gabe Newell gets the praise for it the most as he is the face for the company.
Same with movies. Do we recognize the director or producer who made the movie? No, we tend to recognize the actor who is the main character. They have become the face of the movie and tend to get most the feelings about the movie placed on them, as they are the largest and most visible part, it makes sense.
