How do you play sandbox RPGs?

Hello everybody,

I would like to know how you guys usually play games like Skyrim or Divinity Sin. I am used to playing linear games like Diablo and Mars, but when it comes to play sandbox games sometimes I get lost, don't know what to do or where to go to.

In Skyrim join the guilds and follow the storylines of the guilds, while also following the main storyline at a relatively slow pace, not to rush it. Talk to all the non player characters and see if they have any information or quests. Explore, do every quest you can find. In a sandbox game you make your own objectives. Like for example I like to collect every single book in the game. And I like to collect every single piece of armor and weapon in the game.

Mostly I try to avoid the main storyline and drift around a bit. Just exploring is usually more fun. Doing the smaller sidequests until there's nothing left on that part... and then, oh well, let's just see how the world has to be saved this time.


Although in a few games it kind of sucks, they force you to go to part x of the main storyline, or else everything in the world is blocked off, and even main storyline characters simply don't exist unless you're at that specific part. They call themselves sandbox/freeroam, but are actually extremely linear instead.

I like the story but I guess I got anxious to fight and fight like like those linear games. As I discussed I will try to play like I'm reading a book.

I always explore aimlessly for a while and see what the world holds for me. Then I usually start looking for a way to deck myself out in OP equipment and proceed to take on the story.
