Squid Game
It should have been called "Calamari Contest".

Yes, I know it refers to a Korean kids' game, but so what?

It’s just another stupid Netflix trend, it’ll die off by the 2nd season

Tbh, i don't think second season will be good either, unless, they have already planned how that show would continue and end. I felt like the quality started dropping on the last two episodes, and ending wasn't that surprising.
I'm expecting a Hunger games style full scale revolt against the socio-economic disparity in the modern capitalistic society.

Erm, no, Not quite.

Words are defined by USAGE. Dictionaries are DESCRIPTIVE not prescriptive.

So even though a word may be incorrect technically, the moment it falls into usage and is a form of communicating something, then it IS valid.
Actually I would say "octopodes" is correct and the most accurate one. Octopus comes from Latin which came from Ancient Greek. "Octo" literally even in Modern Greek means "eight" and the "pus" means foot "ποῦς" and the word "ποῦς" in plural is "πόδες" pronounced similar to the English one "podes".
Way to miss the point.

Sure, it can be determined to be TECHNICALLY correct as I clearly said.

But that's not how words work. If people use the word wrongly then that usage becomes definitive.

Look at how younger people use the word "literally".

I don't understand people's sudden, weird fascination with this show.

I don't understand why people were interested in Battle Royale genre as a whole.
It just seems like the cheapest, most lame concept possible to me.
But I'm used to that by now... there are so many things about most other people that I absolutely don't understand, this is just another one amongst them.

It's not even remotely a new thing.

Since time immemorial kids (and adults) have followed trends. Nothing new there at all. Of course what shapes this is how media and conversation work. Back in the 1970s you could look at the fact most communication was magazines, TV, radio, friends, and not a lot else. So for that reason you can see why certain toys went ballistic. Because they were advertised freely via these methods. Likewise certain music or anything you can think of.

It's no surprise today that with the internet we're seeing more esoteric or niche things get popular purely because of the nature of how the internet works. It crosses all regions and when you have that many people even niche things gather a massive fandom.

So it's not at all surprising as this is just basic human nature.

There is one thing though - the rate at which things become popular is proportionate to how long they last generally. If something goes massive quickly, chances are it will die quickly too.

You just explained that in your best Greek. I think everyone found the text educational, regardless of what the discussion is about.

As I said, they're DESCRIPTIVE not prescriptive.

They work as communication. All that is required that they convey the message, which means all that matters is they enter common usage.

Ergo, the word "literally" being used by younger people to the extent it can be used as the OPPOSITE to what it was previously.
