But generally it's not unheard of for people to let animals graze on their property. I've done it.
Though it wasn't chickens.
Yeah I feel like I've seen people rent tiny horses to eat their grass around here, it's not super rural but it's kinda half suburbs and half rural.
Without knowing your country and region, your best bet would be to make sure there's no local rules or regulations preventing you (ring your local council if you're unsure). And if all's good, ring some farmers who have chickens. If you can't get any luck there, then simply put an advert in some local classifieds there and someone who has a small lot of chickens might oblige.
What will the neighbors think? They'll have to protect their corn fields form all those hungry hungry hens.
This is exactly why I love OT. The breadth of knowledge is astounding.
Thanks, Crunchy Frog. And everyone else that knows this sh!t.
Or you can buy a chicken then give it away if you don't need it... or chicken dinner.
Caution and all that.
I wouldn't go down the actually owning chickens route unless you REALLY know what you're doing. Then there's the diseases and the neighbours to think about too :)
Renting or getting them to peck around, now that's a cheap option.
