They exist solely to create the illusion of control over what is basically an ongoing cutscene. QTEs might still count as interactive elements, but they don't have anything to do with proper gameplay because you are never actually in control. There is no dynamic action, just two predefined animations for either success or failure.
When watching an actual movie, have you ever thought to yourself "Damn, that's a cool scene! I wish I could mash a button right now to make me feel like I just did that!" I bet you haven't.
I really hate the ones where I have to change my hand position on the controller or keyboard to mash a button so hard, and so many times, that I either need a "turbo button controller" or have to rest afterwards because there is no possible way to do it comfortably... Especially in horror games, it seems jumpscares and button mashing has become the order of the day, and it isn't scary, it's just plain annoying. Hell, how would someone with an arm or hand injury even play it? It is just like "motion controls", a stupid gimmick that needs to die.
Some games are so bad that modders will make "trainers" or mods that either disable the QTEs or hack them to allow a normal person, one NOT high on cocaine, to progress through the game.
I wish QTEs were banned from videogaming entirely.
Yup. +1
I mean, I don't have any problem with QTE except if they're stupid, like this one.
