Windows is better than Linux
Why do people bother with Linux, no program supports that anyway.

I can imagine that if you cannot afford Windows that you would prefer Linux. :csgoskull:
Well, clearly the common folk knows better if they can't afford Windblows-- but the real Chads know what's best :signix:

The Micro$oft tax is a real thing. Also there's no point in poor-shaming mega-corps for running their servers on Linux and BSD.

You can literally download Windows 10 and 11 installations from the official site and just use them without any online accounts and licenses...

That's because Microsoft is aggressively fighting for market share and has other sources of income. More traditionally OEM and volume licencing and more recently, marketing, information brokering and web hosting. The former two recent examples making you the product.

Customization is definitely top notch on Linux. If you want your desktop to look and feel like Windows? You can do that. If you want it to act like Mac, you can do that. If you want it to work similarly to a smart phone, you can do that. If you want to do something none of these do, like tiling windows, you can also do that.

Then there's package management. Package management is so much better on Linux. I can install things just basically by telling my computer to go find and install it for me. I don't have to do it all myself.

Then there's performance. Many games run better on Linux. I was able to use a custom kernel that is fine tuned for a second gen Ryzen CPU with a scheduler that emphasizes gaming better than you can at windows, giving me more stable, and higher performance in a lot of titles. With Windows you get one kernel, and that kernel is not optimized for anything, since it has to be able to do everything. It's a jack of all trades, but a master of nothing.

The lack of built-in spyware and keyloggers is just icing on that cake.
This post is a summary of why Linux will come to the fore by hook or by crook, one day in the future. Kernel thing you mentioned, is the deadliest weapon of Linux against other OS, even eclipsing "lack of spyware and other trash" feature.

That, but also the Linux kernel already supports more hardware. You can't even use a PS5 controller to play a game on Windows without some janky third party app to emulate an Xbox controller since that's the only controller Windows supports. But the Linux kernel supports pretty much all controllers right out of the box. No DS4Windows needed, my Dualsense controller is plug and play.

Sure GNU/Linux gained new users over that time, but wasn't it mainly Apple who gained a lot of popularity with their Macbooks?

Apple has never achieved the level of popularity they had before their company collapsed in the early 90s, which MIcrosoft had to bail them out of so not to face legal problems relating to having a monopoly over the market share. Since then Apple has picked up a little bit, but are nowhere near where they once were. Their phones are their bread and butter now, and Microsoft has tried to enter that market, and failed.

Linux on the other hand has only gone up in popularity. Despite Microsoft and Apple, Linux is more popular now than it has ever been at any point in it's history and it's popularity is already skyrocketing exponentially.

Something else to keep in mind is Android uses the Linux kernel. And Apple uses a kernel that is fairly similar. Microsoft is the odd one out. Gaming and being the default operating system on pre-builts has always been their bread and butter, and that's changing rapidly. They've pretty much already lost that gaming advantage entirely.
Android uses the Linux kernel, the ext4 file system and that's where all the similaritys to a full desktop GNU/Linux distro ends.
It's immutable (which isn't the most common on desktop pcs), has its own init system, own packaging format with apks, applications run in their own container, it doesn't use X.org, nor Wayland to display contents on the screen and far more.

Apple (both macOS and probably IOS too) being similar to the Linux kernel is mainly because of the fact that both are Unix-like operating systems. Meaning why they are very similar and easy to port between. (i think the mesa drivers on freeBSD for example are backported from Linux as an example) They are still quite different.
And the Linux kernel was developed from Scratch, while MacOS is still based on the BSD family of operating systems.

But surely, porting Games from Linux, over to MacOS wouldn't be too difficult. Things like the file structure are basically the same.

Linux IS the kernel. What you're seeing and interacting with on a desktop as you perceive it isn't Linux, but that particular desktop environment. Usually KDE or Gnome. They all have different package managers, some are even immutable like Fedora Silver Blue.

What i wanted to say is that while Android is Linux. From an end users perspective. A desktop OS using the Linux kernel is quite different from an Androis OS using the same kernel.

I use my computer mostly for gaming and browsing the internet. I see no reason to use any other OS

Although I hate windows for how intrusive they are becoming over the years I appreciate the simplicity of the OS. Tried getting into Linux and boy what a headache that was. Can't get peripherals to work, installing everything via the terminal gets annoying and the sheer lack of support for many softwares I use daily. It's too much to deal it with honestly.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
