Doom 1 or Quake 1???
I never played either and I have been buying retro games a lot recently (I got Duke Nukem the other day great game) so I have been doing lots of research and they both seem to have great pros but I don't know, I want to get the first one because I just really like to see how everything started. So which one?

Doom. It's the better choice in the long term. Doom has a better presentation, level design and all-round spirit. It was from Id Software at their prime. Quake was the last game developed by the great duo John Carmack and John Romero and the whole dev team was tired and unmotivated at the time. Also Doom is easier to use with source ports and has many great mods (see Brutal Doom).

One of my biggest problems with Quake on Steam is that it has absolutely no music. This is because the game reads the music directly off the CD, which one obviously doesn't have if you buy it online. Doom's music is embedded directly into the game files as MIDI music. Also Doom still has quite an active multiplayer community with ZDaemon and Zandronum.

If you do get Doom, I can help you out with most things. If I seem over-anxious, I am. Doom is one of my all-time favourite games, I'll help a fellow Doomer any day.

Quake's music was by design so you could put whatever you wanted in and it would play. Carmina Burana was a big choice to play by.

I personally recommend that buy Doom 3: BFG Edition. Because it contains Doom 3 and it's expansions as well as Doom 1 and 2, emulated very well. If you buy the stand-alone version of Doom on Steam then you're getting the original game, emulated very poorly through DOSBox.

Source ports tho.
BFG is an inferior version, it looks worse and only a few mods work.

I see you went with the stand-alone version of Doom. If you're having trouble or are displeased with DOSBox, I recommend using ZDOOM. It's a free source-port that perfectly emulates all games under the Doom engine. The game will run smoother, let you change to a proper resolution, re-bind keys etc.

If you want, I can help you set it up. It's not very complicated.

Well, if you say so. Personally, I can't stand DOSBox Doom. It's way too outdated, even for me.
