RTX is just extra spice. For all its issues, cyberpunk 2077 just looks that much nicer when you walk through the Afterlife or through rain soaked streets with neon signs with rtx on.

Although to be fair once you've "wow"ed at it once or twice it just becomes background noise again.

It's yet another one of those things where somebody has to point out what it does before you really notice. Which of course means it's completely pointless. Though tbf it is still kind of neat and very impressive.
I'd rather people demand it instead of letting yet another technology disappear and have graphics/physics/AI stagnate for another decade.

Ray Tracing done right looks incredible. Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition is probably the best extant example.

As good as it looks on our end, it's really on the development end that it's a game-changer, though. Instead of taking hours to fake lighting in a scene, all a dev has to do with RT is just put in the light source, select the color and luminosity and that's it. MANY MANY HOURS SAVED.

This is an excellent point. I've been saying to myself that I've seen faked setups that look pretty much as good, but I hadn't considered that that takes tons of time and resources.
Teardown gives me enough satisfaction with its much lighter implementation.

It's really cool and all, but I agree it should really only be used sparingly

It's here for good. It'll gain traction on PC over the next few years and the next generation of consoles will be RT-focused. Then it will be the norm.

Like Pixel Shaders. And AA/AF. Remember when those were just neato new fangled things?

Ray tracing is extremely overhyped

Okay, I may sound like a salty GTX 10XX user, but the sheer amount of hype around ray tracing is ridiculous and makes my head hurt.

I'm not saying ray tracing is bad and unncessary, in fact it can look great if done correctly, just take a look at Quake II RTX
https://youtu.be/unGtBbhaPeU

What makes my blood boil though is when ray tracing is prioritized and people act like any and EVERY game needs it. Just look at this ♥♥♥♥
https://youtu.be/1KFGlzy4Ki4

I personally played Dimension of the Machine and liked everything about it, including the graphics. The combination of blocky goemetry, pixelated textures and more modern lighting capabilities created such a unique aesthetic. Well, someone thought this game DESPERATELY needs ray tracing, so they wasted 5$ on someone's Patreon to play this ♥♥♥♥ that looks like a poorly made Minecraft shader with filters set to 100%.

My point is: not all games need ray tracing and you shouldn't waste your time and money on something that isn't even true ray tracing, plus looks worse than the original. CS:GO and Black Mesa both use rasterization, yet they have the most realistic graphics I've ever seen in any of my games. Not everyone has good enough hardware to run ray tracing, and they shouldn't feel bad for it. Everyone has standards, every game has standards but people just don't seem to care. It's not like you need ultra realistic lighting with 4K60fps in order to enjoy games released 20+ years ago.

Gaming industry in general is way too focused on graphics these days. Instead of constantly pumping out overkill cards that only 10% of gamers will get access to, we should encourage gameplay, interactivity and artistic expression. I would rather play a game that has good gameplay, story AND graphics then some blocky game with global illumination that gets boring after 2 hours.

Everything is extremely overhyped..... that's how the world is today.
I never experienced how Ray tracing feels like I'm so poor

I feel like this kind of argument is advocating for a position that's already accepted. I don't expect more than a niche minority think "all games need ray tracing", and not even they would be arguing for something that "looks worse than the original".
I played quake 2 rtx on geforce now and while it's look good I'm like ... it's not worth the price of a card that is required to have it.

lot's of games also ''fake'' the kind of effects you get from Real time ray tracing with simple shaders pretty well too.

because a computer is not just gaming and in general even if you own a console you're probably still gonna need a computer to do the serious stuffs like banking , shopping , Arts and content creations and more.

there also genre of games like RTS you don't find very often on consoles ... :cocochan2:

It looks cool that ray tracing thing

But does not look like something worthy
We need to have 90s level CGI real-time graphics in games already.

Alas, there's still no games that would have the graphics quality of the dinosaurs from OG Jurassic Park, or the quality of toys from OG Toy Story.
