Is twilight that bad?
So i bought the whole collection to watch it with my gf and when it came out i didn’t enjoyed it that much. But after watching 4 movies by now i actually start to liking it.I don’t know why i didn’t liked it in the past tho but even the glitter effect with edward wasn’t that cringe anymore. What are your thoughts about the series?

I think Twilight bad is society's manipulation. It happened because majority of the boys wish to see some fearsome vampires with power. It turns out to be a bad romance where only a few could understand and the rest falling asleep. :erune: If you can appreciate "loving someone dangerously" then maybe you can appreciate the title.

Twilight (the books) are mostly just mediocre in terms of content and no worse than the average Harlequin romance novel. Unfortunately none of those to my knowledge had such levels of publicity or popularity, or major motion pictures made out of them; which means everyone views the Twilight books as much worse than they ever really were (sans editing and grammar, which were abysmal) because of it. This, of course, is just my humble and poorly worded IMO.

now if you'll excuse me i'm off to bed my billionaire NASCAR driving former Navy Seal Viking sheik

edit: also the movies are better than the books because the movies had conscious editors

It is PG-13 rated mormon sparkle vampire series filled with nothing but privileged teen angst from a Mary Sue main character.

Most people see it as TERRIBLE.

But someone out there must love mormon sparkle vampires and Mary Sue teen angst.

Yeah it's not unusual.

I genuinely believe Stephanie Meyer tapped something deep in the American psyche which made this series sell right.

Well not just American, plenty of European teens love it as well.... I even see full grown (mostly female) liking it and having all the books etc.. I reckon most of them would claim it was a "phase" but still be happy about it.

The same could be said with just about any popular "coming of age, book/movie/whatever"

Ah, so, it tapped something deeply human then.

I'm not sure what to think.
It certainly doesn't appeal me at all that's all i can see.

It is a pretty normal phase for most humans to experience, some ofc, end up with a tad different experiences and culture/generation ofc also plays in.. Anyway... want to sell to teens?... make it about coming of age.

Take all the new Action Adventure games out there, notice how most of them play into this experience as well... In that sense, if twilight series had been a PC or even better PS game series, about the same theme, then it would be a top seller.

I suppose my Vampire fiction took the shape of Cirque du Freak, rather than Anne Rice novels...

however, set Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines infront of a teen and they'll go nuts for it.

Something else is tickling my brain about this but I can't quite place it.

Anne Rice was pretty popular, not just with the first book, but most of them, but the one thing to understand, is that it was mostly female readers! That being said, gender, culture, generation, etc etc etc... all have different extra traits attached to the "coming of age"

There is a reason why Twilight is succesful or that new Star Wars game by EA.....

I liked Julie E. Czerneda's romance novels more.

Or Piers Anthony, I suppose, Ogre Ogre always stuck with me.

Perhaps what Twilight is selling to me is not appealing for one reason or another. I can certainly see how it might be, all mockery aside...but it is strange to me how much attention it got, both positive and negative.

Look at any popular movie, book, game and notice how people mass love and hate it.. The fact something garners attention, tells us that it has an impact on people, one way or the other. Again, many of the "coming of age" works, is hit and miss on different cultures, generations and genders. Some try to be universal ofc.. you often see that with TV series from the 80´s and 90´s they add abit of everything, to satisfy everybody.

It seems easier to publish enjoyable books than difficult books.

Perhaps the question might better be framed as: "What is enjoyable about Twilight?"

I can see the teen romance aspects of it, and the desperation and conflict it brings, which it does very well...

Obviously yes. People don´t want stuff to get overcomplicated and they want to be able to relate.
Why do you think HP is popular after all....
