Do graphics matter in video games?
There are many considerations that gamers can have when it comes to buying/playing a new game. Sound, mechanics, lore, stability, brand recognition, genre, features, grahpics, etc.

I'm curious however about 1 specific consideration: graphics.

Which of the following is most true:

When it comes to graphics, _________ see it as a consideration for the quality or enjoyment of the game

1) few gamers
2) most gamers
3) no gamers (it's not a consideration at all)
4) all gamers
5) around 50%

Explanation

It's my position that all the above mentioned factors and more (including graphics) are a consideration when it comes to determining whether or not the game is interesting or fun (enough to buy or play), and that most games think the same way.

While it is true that graphics aren't the only consideration (there are some great looking duds out there), it is also true that graphics is a part of the equation. This doesn't mean that the game has to have the most modern, best possible graphics, but simply use relatively modern technology and appropriate graphics. One example is the game Prison Architect - simple, flat, yet modern styling.

I'm sure it's true that some gamers do not care about graphics whatsoever. And to its contrast, I'm sure it's true that some gamers prioritize graphics above all else.

But it seems to me that most gamers do at least consider graphics when it comes to video games. In most reviews for games, graphics are mentioned/evaluated. In most forums here players are either complaining or defending the graphics. This all seems to indicate that graphics are at least a part of the consideration process of most gamers.

Thoughts?

Hmmm... didn't realize was going to get into a debate over my preference. Sorry, but my 2600 doesn't hook up to my capture device. You are right, I am sorry you quoted me and I replied. I don't really, in all honesty, give two ♥♥♥♥♥ why you like a game. I don't feel the need to further defend or comment on my preference for what is important to me in a game beyond my first.

I restate my original post of
Gameplay
Story
Everything else

That is what matters. No, graphics by them self do not make me want to play a game, or make the game better.. Ascetics are important, but are not necessarily tied to graphics. Everyone else can have their opinion. I am not going to defend mine.
Seems you misunderstand. Not a single person has suggested that your preference is or even could be wrong.

What happened instead was merely a correction of a misunderstanding you seemingly had between the issues of "graphics only" and "graphics included."

TDo graphics matter in video games?
It's very simple. If you don't care about graphics, go play the NES, Atari 2600, or Coleco Vision. Or put video games away and start playing role playing games with dice and books.

For the vast majority, graphics does matter, otherwise, we'd still be gaming like the early 70s with Pong.

True.

What about this retro trend in modern games to use pixel art as a graphic style though?

Those are indie games; usually they are small groups of people that don't have the experience and cash to throw at developing games they don't have experience in. Extremely few indie games are successful.

That is mostly an indie thing because they are too poor or lazy to make a full 3D game. Plus those games are all made by evil hipster robots.

Good 2D art is a lot more expensive then 3D.

Whatever you want to believe. The evil hipster robots may already have you. ^_^

True, but that doesn't answer the question. Does that type of art style appeal to you?

I'm not really sure. I often have to make a choice between playing Dawn of War Soultorm with the UA for it's fantastic battles mod or Dawn of war 2 for it's graphics. Usally the massive battles come victorius over good graphics but it does make me stop and think.

Games sometimes needs to be aesthetically pleasing to me :\
Fir 13/out./2015 às 21:39
Another thing I want to add to this is how the lore or story may tie into the game.
I would play Darwinia becuase it is fun as hell, the lore to it is a computer simulation world and not much more.

But I would be disapointed if a game like Warhammer 40k Dawn of War or Skyrim had graphics like darwnia. A game with a great story and lore needs fitting visuals. Think about how lame 40k would look if it's explosions were splashis of pixxils.

That's the crux of the issue - the art you see in most 2D indie games are not nearly as good as the best sprite art you got 20 years ago, and you think standards would have improved since then.
Hooch 14/out./2015 às 8:06
I don't think it's true that 2d art is more expensive than 3d art. Why do you believe that?

Don't care about graphics as long as the artstyle is interesting.
