Though most of the world is now more accepting of a less strict definition.
like... steven spielberg is a fan of anime and I feel like he tried to make "we're back" in a sort of anime style for a western audience... but it's not really anime, is it?
anime is just a short trendy word for animation now.
it's cartoons. period.
its like when adults who like comics call them graphic novels to make them feel better about their 'hobby'. like it makes it more adult or distinguished.
fun fact : it doesn't.
So yea sure, family guy is anime. who cares anymore. its a cartoon.
In the rest of the world, no.
The issue with tugging at this thread is that anime isnt just an art style- it has cultural differences that can't be replicated by Western creatives- no matter how much they try.
Well, not really.
Cartoons are mainly aimed at kids. The Japanese, traditionally target more audiences with more subject matter, so a better translation of anime is "animation".
Many people don't realise that, because they haven't taken a closer look. They just think that anime is the stuff that is mostly popular with young boys.
Oh, and the term generally applies to a specific artistic style, or production in the far east. It's a little vague on those points though.
