I don't have much experience with this genre. But this game was pretty decent... :Pirat::_sword_:

Sorry, I'm confused.

Might be crazy! But my name is for jokes!
Nekopara is wholesome and family friendly and you won't convince me otherwise!
Try "The Letter".

I didn't like it, but it was pretty well recieved.
1. Creating a VN is not difficult. Most of the work on it would be from multi-media media assets rather than coding.

2. Sex sells.

Because they're cheap to make and the people that buy them are not buying them for their production quality. Cheap smut has a high profit-margin.
you are a shame to your username

No, most visual novels take time to make.
It's the other junk that takes like no time.

Time?

And, like... uh... how much time did it cost you to make that observation?

Are there many "visual novels" that take teams of developers four years to make? Or, is one guy in his basement really churning them all out using the same engine, but now with AI art with a "breasting boobility manga girl with suspicious Adam's Apple, panty-shot still image" prompt?

Eh?
You are aware women have Adam's apples, right?
It's kind of an important part of your body. :P You have to have it.

I haven't made any games, and any game I would make would not be good enough to put on Steam. LOL.
"Look at my lame Text based adventure game. 0/10, IGN." :P

Last time I Checked, basically every single visual novel on Steam takes longer to make than any of the shovelware crap games all over Steam in the Adult section.

Now, I'm sure some visual novels can be crap, but compared to every single crap game I've seen, on Steam, all over, every visual novel is a billion times the quality.

LOL.
Because they're easy to come up with.
The product will be far from a perfect one, but there will be many many of them, so it evens out and becomes worth it more than coming up with an elaborated deep masterpiece because the cost and risk of success is set that high.

Have you ever heard about Steins;Gate and visual novels alike..?
While it's cool that they'a out, they're setting up the bar way too high, so the readers do have those high expectations already..

So, yeah.
Steins;Gate is definitely recommended, all of them (no need for the Elite, but if it comes as a part of a bundle, go for it).
That reminds me.. Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram or how can or can't be as an entire bundle, but.. Once you take a look, you will see.

I mighta get back here and provide an additional reply or edit this one for more recommendations.
For the time being, I'm heading back to sleep-
Oh, and.. Could you specify which genres or subgenres you're mainly looking for? That'd make it all the easier for us.
Honestly any genre does besides like “coming of age” ones. I like horror/thrill ones a lot or psychological ones of that makes sense. Romance is fine. Anything that creates suspense, I like. Thank you for recommending btw!

You could try checking the visual novel category page, and filter by checking off some themes and features.

It probably helps to temporarily turn on the AO filter when doing so.

Still kinda sucks you can't exclude tags on those pages, like with the search function.
