Is Diablo 2 boring or is it just me?
I'm just... bored. Really bored really fast. I never played it back in the day. I don't want to post this on the official forums cos of the fanboys.

Playing WOW vanilla today is way more fun than Diablo 2. And I got no nostalgia for that either. I never played WOW vanilla back in the day. It has a LOT more skills to manage even early level, beautiful open world, better writing, more variety with the different zones for different races, crafting skills, player interaction.

I levelled a human paladin to 60 last year. And it was a ton of fun. I got bored of Diablo 2 after clearing the first dungeon. It's just auto attacking and using 1 skill. And from what I see, ideal builds barely use any skills, even when levelling.

Is it just me or is Diablo 2 dated and boring?

20 years ago, it was very interesting. But its mechanics are very dated by today's standards. And its remake didn't change much about that.

WOW vanilla is also 20 years old. And it feels light years ahead of Diablo 2. It feels like something made by an entirely different company. Even though it only released 4 years after Diablo 2.

I did try the Diablo 2 remake, not the original. It's just a coat of paint. You can swap to the old look instantly at the press of a button. Cool feature.

It's boring. Back in the day you would see hundreds of people sitting in the Battle Net chat lobbies showing off their character, trading or just chatting.

While it's become an overused term, looter ARPGs like Diablo very much fit the concept of 'gameplay loop'. The gameplay doesn't significantly evolve or even get more difficult as time goes on; instead you continue to just stay on top with a constant stream of slightly more powerful gear contrasting with an equally constant stream of slightly more powerful enemies. The driving force for players is the thrill of getting the next RARE quality THING, but when one thinks about it critically that RARE THING isn't much different than the last RARE THING and doesn't change the dynamic as much as it appears. I suppose if one can see through that something like Diablo becomes a lot less appealing.

It also probably means you have a less addiction-prone personality than many other videogame players, which is a good thing.

diablo died at 3 for me. i suddenly realized that it's just a point and click game, and diablo's allure disappeared.

and yah, diablo 2 is boring.

I did play Diablo 3 for about 1000 hours. Both before and after the removal of the auction house. I thought I was going to love Diablo 2 as well. In Diablo 3 the skills are a lot more flashy, you got more of them to manage, builds can be changed whenever you want, certain items can completely change your playstyle. It is also more fast paced than Diablo 2.

ARPGs have also gotten A LOT faster. Compare Diablo 2 and Titan Quest to games like Path of Exile or Chronicon (super fast end-game) and you'll notice that people like faster, flashier action rather than a slow, mundane crawl.

It is for me at this point. I played the heck out of it in 2000-2001 when it was big on Battle.net and had a good time with friends.

But its time has passed.

Maybe it's not your stuff, plus the game prolly aged like milk so it does not help.

There are mods that significantly enhance older titles. DOOM 1993 as the most obvious one. I got no nostalgia for it yet I spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours in it thanks to mods.

Any total overhaul mods for Diablo 2?

I played the remaster recently, while it's a great remaster I had some issues with the core gameplay.

- The base difficulty is too easy, you have to play through the game on ezmode to presumably get some kind of challenge on Nightmare. That's a shame, because the horror atmosphere of the game is amazing, but ti's not backed up by any kind of dread at the enemy.

- Being able to port out of combat at any time also compromises gameplay and the feeling of danger.

- Spamming potions to make up for HP/MP loss isn't good game design. The sequel had the right idea in heavily limiting the use of potions while also taking them out of your inventory.

- The skill system basically encourages you to spend heavily on just a few skills, leading to simplistic and repetitive combat.

- As someone said above, when enemies are constantly dropping random good-quality gear, it loses its meaning. The new blue axe has a bit higher dps than the last one, whoop-de-doo. To be fair, I've mostly ignored gems and sockets, which does sound more customizable than using random ♥♥♥♥ dropped by enemies.

I think D3 recognized and addressed most of these issues, but as it's an unnecessarily live-service title, I haven't played it much.

WOW was designed to be addicting for the sub fee.
Diablo 2 grows on you. An acquired taste. I played 3 first, but I find myself going back to 2 more and more,
Something about the music and pacing feels pretty hardcore after it clicks.
